Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust orangutans of jersey zoo

Although you say the other 2 females at Jersey are mother and daughter, they don't always get on and aren't usually mixed, whereas the daughter, Mawar gets on very well with the new female, Dana. Hopefully this will remain after Dana gives birth!

That must be a fairly recent development? Does it mean Gina and Mawar live seperately on a semi- permanent basis nowadays?

So how are the Orangutans currently kept in terms of 'who lives with whom' etc? Any news is very welcome.

I do not know what the fuss is all about. In the wild female orangs will leave their parent when sexually mature. Thus, the behavioral development of Gina and Mawar towards one another entirely natural .... :D

I would advocate that both be bred to a male separately. It would be equally nice to have if Jersey had accomodation for ... say ... several individual groupings. What is the current setting?

I have just added a number of photos to the Gallery which are scans of old photos from Bristol. There are shots of Henry, Anne and Oscar, with Buttons the chimp and the male gorilla Samson who are all mentioned in earlier posts in this thread.

Recent update:

Current Orangutans are Dagu (m b.1985), Gina (f b.1964), Mawar (f born 1988?), Dana (f born 1988), Jiwa (m b.1999), Jaya (m b.2004), and Gempa (m b.2005).

Firstly, Dana and Mawar can no longer be kept together (because of Mawars jealousy of Dana and Dagu). Today, the larger island was home to Dana, Gina, Jiwa, Jaya and George the Lar Gibbon. The smaller island was home to Mawar, Dagu, Gempa, and Hazel the Lar Gibbon (not sure why the gibbons were not together...).

I think that Dana may be pregnant again, judging by the size of her belly! Hopefully, all goes well this time!

Gempa spent most of the time I was watching chasing Hazel, which was great to watch.

Finally, the highlight of the day was watching Jaya creating a hommock out of a sack!

Dana and Mawar are not kept together as they do not get on great, it cannot be said Mawar is "jealous" of Dana and Dagu, Mawar does not tolerate Dana when mixed on their own, Dagu being out of the equation. Just a personality thing.
Dana is not pregnant.

It seems there are problems with Jersey's current adult female Orangutans being kept with each other any more. And previously Julitta went through a similar phase and was then sent to Amneville Zoo in France. It isn't really surprising as the adults of both sexes are not social group-livers in the wild.

Jersey's Orangutan accomodation has two large indoor dens and two outdoor islands with watermoats. As well as Dagu, the male, there are currently three adult females Gina & Mawar- mother & adult breeding daughter, and unrelated Dana, plus several young male offspring. I think the females and their offspring are currently divided up by which animals will live with which. (A previous unrelated female Julitta was sent to Amneville Zoo as she wouldn't mix with the others).

Who lives with who varies on a daily basis so they do get to interact with various individuals :) nice for the youngsters!
