All the Jersey group are Sumatrans
Gina is the eldest female, I think she must be about 45 by now
I think her son Jaya is still with her
The male is Dagu
The other female is Marwar, and I think she has two offspring with her still (Jiwar, and the younger one's name escapes me)
I think that Julitta and her youngster have been moved to another zoo

Can you elaborate on this at all?

But I saw a photo of a female Orangutan at Amneville Zoo recently and thought it looked exactly like Jersey's Julitta.(obviously it was!)I'd heard Julitta was no longer compatible with the other females( Gina and Mawar-mother and daughter) and was largely living alone now. So its not an unsurprising outcome. Jersey's other current babies are both male and only Mawar is likely to breed in the future- Gina's last birth was a Caesarian.
For Chester fans, Julitta is the 'aunt' of Chester's females Emma and Subis, her brother Oscar was their father. Oscar and Julitta were both born at Bristol Zoo.

Oscar was a very sucessful breeder. This may be the Bornean Osacr that was kept at Chester, or it may be the Sumatran Osacr, that mated with Ramona, to produce Subis and Emma.

The only 'Oscar' at Chester was the Sumatran male who was paired with female Ramona (who came from, I think, E. Berlin). Their only offspring at Chester were Emma and Subis.
Henry and Anne, the original breeding pair at Bristol produced three offspring, Oscar, Henrietta and Julitta.
Henrietta and Julitta stayed at Bristol and after their father Henry died, were paired(along with their mother Anne) with a new male 'Adam' (ex Bellevue Zoo Manchester, via Flamingo Park and Colchester Zoos) All three females had several babies by Adam, nearly all of which died. Only one survived- 'Kertawa' (Adam x Henrietta) was handraised at Twycross- unfortunately he was later sent to Japan...
Henrietta died at Bristol, leaving the trio of Adam, Anne and Julitta. When Bristol gave up keeping Orangutans, Adam and Anne were sent to Santillana del Mar in Northern Spain, while Julitta went to Jersey.
Adam and Anne had one further baby(female) in Santillana. Anne later died followed by Adam but the daughter is still there and now paired with a male. This is the old male Adam's only surviving offspring.
Julitta had two babies at Jersey. The first was a male' Wirawan'- the father was their first male 'Gambar' After weaning he was sent to join the Sumatran group at La Boisierre in France, only to be killed by their adult male 'Major' (this was a bad decision to introduce him) Julitta's second baby was fathered by the current male 'Dagu.' It is a female 'Putri' and was sent with her mother earlier this year to Amneville Zoo in France, (as I've only just discovered)
So Emma and Subis and their offspring are now the only UK descendants from the Bristol line....
Somewhere I have photos of Oscar as a baby in the (awful) old ape house at Bristol, probably from 1971 or 2. He was a very cute baby - but orangs usually are.

Budi and Utara at Chester, were so cute when they were young. In the best picture, with Subis and Budi, Budi has a little 'quiff' of orange fluff!! I have some video taken when they were a few months old.
Oscar was born 1971. I have photos of Oscar's parents as babies too.
The old Ape House at Bristol was originally the Lion House. It wasn't purpose built for Apes. Only the extension for the Gorillas was added on later.
The 'New' ApeHouse they moved into in 1975 wasn't much better really- it was very unsuitable for Apes in many respects. They had an awful lot of baby Gorillas and Orangutans born and quickly die during that era.
The 'Gorilla Island' is much better except they hardly use the large outside area...
Mawar is Gina's daughter by the first male Gambar.
Mawar's son 'Jiwar' is apparently stunted. This was Mawar's first baby and she was overprotective, hugging him tightly so he was a bit deprived of oxygen and its left a longterm effect in that he is small and slow to develop.
Jersey have bred a number of Sumatran orangs over the years but a high proportion have been males.
I was at Durrell yesterday, so here's a quick update on their orang-utans
Male Dagu (dominant male, born 1985, arrived in Jersey 1995 as replacement for Gambar 1962-1995)
Female Gina (dominant female, born 1964)
Female Mawar (daughter of Gambar and Gina, born 1989)
Male Jiwa (son of Dagu and Mawar, born 1999)
Male Jaya (son of Dagu and Gina, born 2004 by Caesarean section)
Male Gempa (daughter of Dagu and Mawar, born 2005)
Since both breeding females (Gina and her daughter Mawar) have given birth in the last 3 years, Jersey won't be getting any more baby orangutans in the near future unless they decide to bring in a new female to replace Julitta who moved to Amneville earlier this year. Gina may be too old to breed again and Mawar has already bred twice with Dagu, so some new blood wouldn't be a bad idea.
Dagu really looks the part - he has fully developed cheek pouches and is a huge animal. He wasn't in a good mood yesterday. When the keeper threw his lunch bag across the moat, Dagu threw it straight back into the water!
