Oregon Zoo Oregon Zoo News 2021

Heidi Rahn appointed as new director:

New zoo director champions wildlife, sustainability

Rahn previously worked at the zoo from 2013 to 2018, directing implementation of Metro’s $125 million zoo bond program and earning national acclaim for projects prioritizing animal welfare, conservation education and sustainable infrastructure. Under her leadership, the zoo opened some of its most iconic areas, including Condors of the Columbia, Elephant Lands and the Education Center. The latter two projects both earned awards for excellence in innovation and exhibit design from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The new director attributes her sustainability focus to a lifelong conservation ethic. She is passionate about creating a better future for wildlife, and feels a special connection to the zoo’s work on behalf of endangered sea otters and butterflies.

The zoo has received 23 Northwestern pond turtles:

Oregon Zoo conservation lab takes in 23 northwestern pond turtles

The Oregon Zoo welcomed 23 northwestern pond turtle hatchlings this week. The hatchlings are smaller than a walnut and are extremely vulnerable to predators.

According to zoo officials, the little hatchlings were temporarily brought in from the wild and reared in the zoo’s turtle conservation lab until they’re big enough to go back to the wild.

Does the zoo still keep the following species
Allen’s swamp monkey
Black-and-white colobus monkey
Bobcat

The swamp/colobus monkey exhibit is now empty with the pool gone, so where else can they possibly be? And the bobcats are so old are they still there? I’ve never been to Oregon Zoo since I live in PA, Philadelphia is my home zoo.

Not sure if anyone knows on the monkeys, it's been brought up a couple times. Both are still listed on their site so it's a bit confusing. Oregon typically is decent about keeping that list updated.

No idea on the Bobcats.

The pool is full of water again and the zoo now has two Spotted-necked Otters ('Lemmy' and 'Lila') in the former Allen's Swamp Monkey/Colobus exhibit. The zoo just posted a short video of the otters on Facebook.

Does the zoo have any plans to reintroduce the monkeys to that habitat?
