On July 28, our red-rumped agouti family welcomed a new baby. This little one is healthy, active, and already learning to nibble on solid foods. In their native South American habitats, agoutis are a keystone species, meaning they have a large impact on their ecosystem and are the only mammal in Brazil that can crack open Brazil nuts, which helps disperse seeds and grow new trees. Orlando Science Center is working closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, which manages red-rumped agouti populations in human care to ensure species sustainability. Once this baby has reached breeding age (which occurs at only 6 months of age), it will move to a new home at another zoological facility. Until then, you can visit our adorable agouti family in the Rainforest."
