The Red River Hogs were separated this morning. One was closed in, in half of the house, on a large pile of bedding under a lamp. I'm assuming it was the female, Pumbaa, and that she is about to give birth. (Of course, I could be wrong)

Good news. I'm sure you are correct in assuming this scenario. They haven't been there very long have they. Maybe she was pregnant on arrival.

They arrived from Chester in July. I read that gestation is 120-127 days. Watch this space!

I went back today to have another look at the Red River Hogs and they were both flat out (separately) on piles of bedding, so your guess is as good as mine.
I believe Kirana, the 2 year old Sumatran tiger, left today but I don't know her destination yet.

Well maybe they thought she was imminent and she wasn't.

Either that or she was ill- but my guess would be the former. Maybe you can ask a keeper what's happening?

Yes, Kirana was born at Paignton. She was a litter of 2, but the male died. Has there been a recommendation to re-breed the adult pair? Also are there any updates on the lions breeding, are they sexually mature yet?

I don't know much about the big cats but I'll see what I can find out. Gossip among fellow zoo visitors suggests that the male and female tigers will be put back together again now. Also that the lions have shown interest in each other but not at the same time. They look very relaxed together.

Latest from the unofficial grapevine: Kirana is leaving next Thursday, for Chester.

That would go aganst all the rumors at chester, but I hope this is correct as this could become a fantastic pair for chester both being quite young and plenty of time for successfully breeding.

Does that mean the existing male at Chester is staying?

Well finally it seems there's a straightforward solution for Chester's tigers- the 'bengal' females returned to West MIdlands and the male Sumatran gets a purebred girlfriend.:)

This Chester we are talking about here life is not always straight forward with them they have a knack of making things more complicated than they need to be!!!!

Red River Hogs

No developments with the Red River Hogs yet? Do you think it was a false alarm?

On Sunday they were both outside, so it does look like a false alarm. I'll check again tomorrow.

Today, the Red River Hogs were both indoors lying down until a keeper went past with a wheelbarrow when they sped outside. So, I think I jumped to the wrong conclusion :o

From Paignton's website today:
One of Paignton Zoo’s rare Sumatran tigers is heading off to start a new life in the north of England.
Two and a half year old Kirana is moving to Chester Zoo to start a new breeding group.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park Director of Operations and Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said: “We are very pleased that Kirana, as one of the highest ranking females in the Sumatran tiger EEP, has gone to such a good zoo to further the breeding of her species. With luck Tenang and Banda will have their second litter in 2009.”

Kirana and her brother Topan were born at Paignton Zoo on 8th May 2006 to mother Banda and father Tenang. They were the first tiger cubs to be born at Paignton Zoo since 1988. Topan died of a heart condition in December 2006.

Chester Zoo currently has one Sumatran tiger, male Kepala, who’s three. However, as he is related to Kirana, a different male will arrive at Chester to form a new breeding pair with her.

Both zoos are members of the European Endangered species Programme (EEP) for Sumatran tigers, which means they are part of the global effort to save the species from extinction. Captive and wild populations are protected and managed in an attempt to prevent this subspecies following the Bali and Javan tigers: these subspecies became extinct in the 1940s and 1980s respectively.

Banda and Tenang, who have been separated since the cubs were born, are now back together.

I saw the Red River Hogs being fed indoors today. They are separated for feeding and I realise that this is what I saw previously when I jumped to the wrong conclusion. However - they have been seen mating so hoglets could be on the way.
