The only species really bred much in zoos are Giant wetas or genus Deinacrida with Auckland and Butterfly creek breeding Wetapunga ( D.heteracantha) and Otorohaunga beginning to establish one for the Mahoenui giant wētā (D. mahoenui). There is also the Koru Native Wildlife Centre in the southern north island working with the Cook Strait giant wētā (D.rugosa)

Wellington Zoo Te Nukuao

Hello everyone.

Could you tell me approximately how much time would be needed for a full and relaxed visit to this center? I plan to visit it along with the Waitomo Caves on the same day, and I think they're perfectly compatible, but I'd prefer to be sure. Entry to the Caves is at 9:30 am, and I've read that the visit lasts about 3 hours.

On another note, is it very difficult to photograph kiwis? Are they ever visible in daylight?

Most people do the kiwi house and waitomo caves in one day, with most people spending 2 hours or somewhere around there, its not a very huge place

we don't allow photography in the kiwi houses for the kiwis welfare, with flash potentially blinding them, different zoos have different rules tho

My camera don't have flash, it's not a problem. I'm referring more to whether it's possible to see them in daylight.

No they dont allow photos at all in the nocturnal houses

it is very unlikely you will see one in daylight,
