New white handed gibbons arrived at Ouwehands Dierenpark from France and are now visible to the public. :)

Does anyone know where the old gibbons transfered to or if they are kept behind the scenes?

The old gibbon pair died. Ouwehands confirmed this in the comments to that facebook post. The male had died a while ago and the female quite recently. The two new animals are a male and a female.

In other news, Ouwehands recently got a new yak. It is a young male. He has now been introduced to the two females.

Also sharing this on the Dutch part of the forum, as Tusker was a notable Ouwehands inhabitant.

Elephant bull Tusker has passed. He was suffering from tuberculosis and the zoo staff at Zoo Basel (where he was living up until his death yesterday) had to euthanise him.

Tusker fathered Bumi, currently living in Ouwehands, but also Bongi, Pina Nessie and Madiba, currently living in Beekse Bergen. Two of the Beekse Bergen ladies are presumed to be pregnant, so Tusker's offspring will continue to live on in the Dutch zoos.

Sad news from Ouwehands:

Mandrill Valentino was euthanised at the age of 29. The arthritis in his spine caused him so much pain, it became untreatable.

Giraffe Zeus was also euthanised this week. He had serious hoof issues, in which medication could no longer relieve his pain.

The arrival of koalas at Ouwehands Dierenpark is going to take a little longer. They were expected to arrive at the end of this summer, but construction work on their enclosure is still in full swing. They will probably come at the beginning of next year. The animals would then be on public display around Easter.

The first three koalas that Ouwehands gets come from San Diego Zoo. The zoo hopes to get more animals from Australia later.

Recently, two brown bears have died in Ouwehands Dierenpark's bear forest. They are 19-year-old male Duuk and 30-year-old female Maria. Scans showed both animals suffered from spondylosis. This causes bones to fuse together and if this happens near the spinal cord, there is a risk of paralysis. It was therefore decided in the case of both animals to not let them hibernate and euthanise them.

Does anyone know whether San Diego has Northern or Southern koalas? Most European zoos have Northern/Queensland koalas

Ouwehands has placed 85 solar panels on their elephant stables, the energy of which will be spread throughout the whole park. There are also plans for Solar panels to be placed on the future koala enclosure and the storage facilities

Ouwehands announced this today via a press release by email. You can also find the message here: Nieuwstopic Ouwehands Dierenpark - Laafsekikkers.be

Thank you!

I'm curious as to where they're planning on building an Amur leopard enclosure. Their last few projects have been very high quality.

Only places I can think of would be the old circus tent near the pelicans and vultures. Or the Domesticated reindeer enclosure

So am I the only one that was underwhelmed by the new bonobo enclosure?
I was also disappointed by the lack of rooms indoor and the refusal to net the enclosure outdoors. By just splitting the rooms in two with a lower and higher part the enclosure would be way better. Then again I don't think it's a bad enclosure it just had more potential.
