Hello everyone! I'm new to these parts & I'm hoping someone could maybe help me out with some info. I'd be grateful if anyone who has visited Ouwehands recently could tell me if the male orangutan Sibu is still there? It's a very long story so I won't bore you with it ... lets just say he's a very old friend of mine!!

Any info (or even photos!!) would be much appreciated!
 
Mabes, if it is the same Sibu, he is going (has gone?) back to Chester and will be paired up with a female before being sent to another zoo.

Of course, you may be referring to different Sibu, in which case what I just typed was irrevelent! ;)
 
Hi there! Thanks for that but I know for sure that it's not the same Sibu. I had heard about Chester's Sibu before ... something to do with him not fancying the Dutch ladies??? The Sibu I'm looking for though went to Ouwehands from Dublin (if that's any help to anyone!)

A male Orang-Utan from Apenheul, Apeldoorn (a monkeypark) also called Sibu was going to move to Chester. He was supposed to be leaving Apenheul because he fell in love with a blond zookeeper instead of his females. The move has been postponed while the zoo waits for a new female to arrive.

So, Ouwehands Sibu-->Dublin(place of birth)
Apenheul Sibu--> Chester

I dont know if he is still in Ouwehands.

Mabes, have you been a zookeeper in Dublin zoo? Then I know you from Zoosite, the Dutch zooforum?

They can walk above the visitors.
 
I visited Ouwehands in July 2005 and saw a very impressive male orang-utan. Would that have been Sibu?
 
Yes, Bako is the less impresive male. But he is the father of the babies, 2 in 2007 and 1 in 2006.

Yes, you are right, I did work in Dublin Zoo (although zoo keeper may not be the correct term!!) I was a volunteer for about 6 months, helping out in various sections, before I had to return to the UK and had the great privilege of working with my gorgeous friend in your photos. I do remember you from the Zoosite forums but I didn't do very well with learning Dutch & the online translators are rubbish so when I found this site I thought I'd ask around here!

I did get to visit Sibu last year & he did seem to remember me (he was a bit like the other Sibu but with redheads I think!!) I keep an eye on the Ouwehands website & there are usually some photos of him there but since they updated the site there hasn't been any new ones & I was beginning to worry that he'd moved on again.

Hopefully if he is still there, I will be able to get back to see him again maybe in August or September.

A young orangutan died in Ouwehands Zoo. The male called ''Apie', it means Monkey in Dutch, he died because he had a lung disease.

But they have 3 greater flamingo chicks, a new giraffe male from Zoo Schimiding, a new ringtailed lemur exhibith and a new entrance.
 
Today, Swimmer one of the polar bears died. He was born last December and was much smaller then his brother. Visitors saw the unlucky bear lying dead in the enclosure this morning.

I saw them yesterday playing. So sad this news.

Cause of death is unknown yet.
 
Cause of death was an internal bleeding near the midriff, could be caused by rough playing. Considering she was only 4kg and her brother was 10, i think she was too weak to make it really...
 
Again Polar Bear twins have been born in Ouwehands, the mother is Freedom the father is Victor.
 
Not really, as far as i know nothing has started yet.

Only the space it's supposed to occupy is known, the old pinguin enclosure and the dromedary and Yak exhibits if I'm correct.

So that means the transfer of the 5 males from Port Lympne has not happened then?
 
I wouldn't have a clue where they would put them at the moment... Once the constructions are completed they will come (I'm not aware of a time-restriction on their transfer?)
 
I don't imagine there is one. But originally they were mentioned on their website as moving 'later this year' but it sounds like there may be a long delay if there's no enclosure for them.
