Unfortunately more bad and sad zoo news today ... Three-year old African elephant Bumi died last night. The group has said goodbye to him, a cause is not yet known and is being investigated.

It is now known that he died of EEHV. The virus was known to be prevalent in the zoo's elephant group. Therefore, all elephants had been tested weekly for some time now.

On the afternoon of November 4, Bumi's behaviour changed. He became calmer than usual. At that time, it was not possible to draw blood to test for EEHV. Later that evening, he was found dead.

After a month without Grevy's zebras (Equus grevyi), a new male arrived from a Zoo in Spain at the end of November.

At the end of November (a second?) Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis) arrived, both animals can be found in the Urucu volière.

A better piece of news : birth of 1 Parma's Wallaby.
Ouwehands Dierenpark on Instagram: "Kijk nou wat we daar hebben! Er is vier maanden geleden een parmawallaby geboren. Huh? Zo lang geleden? Ja! Een wallaby is namelijk een buideldier. Na een draagtijd van ongeveer een maand, kruipt het piepkleine jong na de geboorte meteen de buidel in. Daar verblijft het enkele maanden en dan is aan de buitenkant haast niets te zien. Pas als het wat groter is, kruipt het jonge af en toe uit de buidel. En dat is dus nu! Kom jij snel op kraambezoek in Koalia? Met een beetje geluk en geduld kun jij de joey ook zien! Apparently he was supposed to land at a nearby soccerfield, but I guess he missed the landing zone.
Luckly the bonobos were inside....

Maybe he got information where to land. Not making a choice to land between tiger, lion, bear, elephant or the white Polar Bears.

This has now been confirmed by Ouwehands itself and given the outdated state of the enclosure it seems like a logical choice anyway...

The priority is on updating current exhibits and expanding the malayan bear exhibit.

The zoo first announced them in their 2022 annual review as one of the new additions for 2023. But this was then postponed. In the 2023 annual review, they were announced again as a new addition for 2024. But it was postponed again. The plans have now been put on hold.

The priority is on updating current exhibits and expanding the malayan bear exhibit.

Not really expanding but a new indoor enclosure is currently being built. Visitors will be able to see the bears inside this indoor enclosure. Which was not possible at the old indoor enclosure.

The young Polar Bear YUKA is being transferred in a French zoo (I don't know which one).

Hij verhuist op aanbeveling van het managementprogramma naar een dierentuin in Frankrijk. Dit is een tijdelijke plek. Great news from the Clouded Leopards: yesterday cubs were born. Ouwehands doens't specify how many have been born but I counted at least three in the video. I visited on monday, just a bit too soon then The babies will stay in their nest box for a while before they are visible to the public.
