Zoo Parc Overloon Overloon zoo news

An updated version of the zoo's map is posted on the website of ZooParc Overloon. It shows a number of changes for this year:

- Next to the lion enclosure, a new enclosure will be built for the African wild dogs. There will also be an enclosure for the meerkats. The old African wild dog enclosure will eventually become vacant. What will happen to it in the future is not known.

- The greater rhea's and red-legged seriema are no longer indicated.

- Also the blackbucks, sika deer and muntjacs are no longer indicated. New species will be housed in their enclosure in mid-2022. These are Mhorr gazelles and ostriches.

- The black howler monkeys will be joined by squirrel monkeys.

- Black-necked swans will be added to the flamingo aviary.

- The green iguana will no longer be housed with the white-faced sakis, but with the tamandua, among others. A new species will also be housed here: the common marmoset.

Recently there has been unrest within the lion group of ZooParc Overloon. The two half brothers Arie and Ben could no longer live in one enclosure with the other lion males. That is why they recently moved to Safari Madrid. As a result, there are now four lion males living in Overloon.

Recently multiple animals have been born/hatched at the zoo; namely 3 Bush dogs (Speothos venaticus), 4 Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinerea) and 3 African penguins (Spheniscus demersus). I am not 100% sure but I believe its the first time that bush dogs have been born at ZooParc Overloon.

Some news from the Dutch zoo magazine "De Harpij":

- From Avifauna and Diergaarde Blijdorp 1.0 and 0.1 Darwin's rhea arrived.
- The three golden lion tamarins came from Zoo Zurich.
- From Belgium 2.0 Puna ibises arrived to join the 0.4 present animals.
- The red-legged seriema male was euthanised for medical reasons, the female moved to Belgium. This means the species is out of the collection.

Some news from the Dutch zoo magazine "De Harpij":

- For the new Madidi area the following animals came in from other zoos: 1.1 boa constrictor from Pairi Daiza, two tamandua's from Germany, 1.0 from Dortmund and 0.1 from Dresden, 28 piranhas, 0.3 azara agouti's and 0.3 red-footed tortoises from AquaZoo Leeuwarden, 2.1 red-footed tortoises from Randers Regsnkoven and 1.1 spectacled caiman from a reptile center.
- For the two female crab-eating raccoons, a male arrived from Zoo de Pescheray in France. This male is originally from South America and is not related to the animals living in Europe.
- Shortly after arrival, the two Darwin's rheas died.

It appeared that the female tamandua was actually a male, therefore a female recently arrived from zoo Dresden. The other male will eventually move to a different zoo and is currently kept in a separate enclosure in the spider monkey enclosure.
Also recently a female two-toed sloth arrived from Zoo Krefeld.
ZooParc Overloon now has a breeding pair of both species.

- Also the blackbucks, sika deer and muntjacs are no longer indicated. New species will be housed in their enclosure in mid-2022. These are Mhorr gazelles and ostriches.
The zoo has since provided more information about this. Later this year five Mhorr gazelles will come to ZooParc Overloon, one male and four females. These come from zoos in Belgium, France and Germany. In the coming weeks the old enclosure of the blackbucks, sika deer and muntjacs will be renovated for the new Mhorr gazelles. A large sand area will be added and a hide will be built. They will share their enclosure with ostriches, another new species for ZooParc Overloon.

Rumour has it that the blackbucks and sika deer will move to AquaZoo Leeuwarden. Here they should come in the new tiger area, although this is most likely temporary. The final species for this area will come to AquaZoo later, after which the Indian antelopes and sika deer will probably leave again.

I am hoping for red-necked ostriches.

I think AquaZoo should go for species like goral and musk deer and the like. Dybowski sika!

Really???
From 2007 to 2011 ZooParc Overloon (not AquaZoo) had a pair of Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus)

I think they would do well to get some of the waterways specialists back. Beaver, otter, shrews ..., some wetland and grasland birds.
I agree. Although AquaZoo now also has beavers and otters in the collection, but not the European species.
