Overview of species kept privately that are almost or entirely absent from public displays

Over and over have I encountered that species I have seen at pet shops personaly (to extent) but even more on social media (what also applied to private keepers and breeders) were almost absent in public institutions or bts at times even never note on zootierliste at all.

So I thought it would be handy to create a thread were such species can be mentioned, maybe with tips when where and how to find them.

Most of them are fish species. Sadly there is still no zootierliste for invertebrates, so it might be a bit hard to tell what their state is in public collections, but maybe they are still worth mentioning.

Two species that I can remember right now are Skiffia multipunctata and Nannacara taenia from Martins Fische https://www.youtube.com/@martinsfische/videos

Would be nearly impossible, as many really don't wat to share/open. I focus on birds, but in reality, if you want to see interesting species, private breeders/dealers is the way to go.

And it goes to a very long extent..

And this is sadly why the following...

in reality, if you want to see interesting species, private breeders/dealers is the way to go.

...is more or less incorrect - much of the time it is only "the way to go" if you already have the required connections by being a private breeder/dealer yourself :P otherwise any attempts to reach out and see these interesting species are liable to be ignored, or (arguably worse) subject to being ghosted at the last minute.

I guess so. I do admit, I have a list of contacts spanning across the globe so have to say I have seen my share of birds over the years..

But yes, if you know one or two people here and there it helps, and it helps opening other doors

Snails are almost absent from zoos. Somethimes the 'giant african snail' is kept, but then they don't bother to put the correct latin name. Most say to have 'achatina achatina' but in fact have Lissachatina fulica.
There are a lot of breeders of exotic snails in Europe, but those species aren't kept in zoos.
