Paignton Zoo Paignton News 2020

Yes, indeed, I agree. We all know that but the people the zoo needs to attract in large numbers are not like us.

I believe the Eastern white stork moved last year and I'm not sure there are any Darwin's rheas left. The kiwi is still on the TV screen, Argus pheasants are audible somewhere, Southern screamers continue to flourish, only black and wrinkled hornbills on show? The train's not running because of covid19. The big cat enclosures are good but the cats have had to split up as a result of TB so are maybe not so visible to passers by. The Ape House is off limits because of covid19 so if the gorillas choose to stay indoors they're a no-show, likewise the orangs to a lesser extent as they are in two groups. Bruce is only on show if he goes outside. So all these wonders might not be instantly accessible to current visitors.
Didn’t know about the Stork, any idea where she went?

Still at the zoo. Off-display but visible from the Cassowary-Tiger path, in the aviary that used to house the Marabou.
Ah! I'd noted down that she had gone. It's hard to keep up with the status of the birds as they seem to move around a lot. The aviaries behind the ABC are hidden by thick foliage at the moment.

Oriental white stork - I took this photo today by leaning over a 'no entry' gate:

There appear to be two of them, something confirmed in the 2019 Inventory - unless those in the know know better. I have to mostly rely on observation and guesswork ;)

I've been trying to track down birds on my last few visits and today noticed a juvenile night heron in the scarlet ibis aviary, along with a hamerkop. Apart from the speckled pigeons in the Brookside aviary, I saw a red-legged sereima, a golden pheasant and something else in the gloom that I couldn't identify. It felt like every time we stopped today, half the zoo decided to stop next to us to see what we were looking at so we had to move away (slight exaggeration;)).

Looks like they now have a pair, which is great. And of course they have the pair of European White Storks formerly at Newquay, one of which I used to know very well.

I wonder if some storks, cranes or Ratite could be added (only if previously pinioned) to the ex Rhea paddock next to the rhinos & opposite the wolves?

The European White Storks are not pinioned. I suspect the Orientals aren’t. Pinioning Storks is no longer accepted good practice.

Yes I know, thankfully, but I did see some Europeans in the ex Ground Hornbill aviary once they’d removed the netting above? I guess I’m just looking for animals that could be displayed in some of the many animal barren areas of the zoo? * I miss the Ground Hornbills

Could they not have the white storks be part of the rewilding project for the UK? Or are they already?

Collectionwise, I am not sure whether it be wise to hold onto both European white and Oriental Storks ...

Perhaps it might look like postage stamp collecting and/or assuring that a diverse bird collection exists (with less duplications). The bird collection per se has always been a strong feature of Paignton Zoo.

I do not know what one might read into my short commentary, I never mentioned PZ not being trusted in the first place.

Personally I’m delighted that they have both species

Are we sure that they still have White Storks Ciconia ciconia ? The 2019 Inventory lists 1.1 at the beginning of the year, and 1 death and 1 departure during the year = 0.0.

Oh dear, how do I access that list, or is it restricted?
