Paignton Zoo Paignton visit 12.8.09!

Thank you for your advice. We are leaving tomorrow morning. We will be going to the zoo on Tuesday and are coming back wednesday evening so I will do an update on Wendsday night or Thursday morning depending on what time we get back.

Any one coming highly recommended Binoculars cameras are not the same believe me just enjoy.wear ear plugs............................

They are opening an amphibian ark there very soon, not sure if it will be open by the time you go. It's near the education centre and walk through ranch, so take a looksie!

I believe someone in an earlier post asked about the baboon rock? Nothing's being developed right now, but they are raising money for it as we speak.

Just got back from Devon after a 4 1/2 hour drive. Went to Paignton Zoo yesterday. Visitor numbers about average for the school holidays. Banda and only 1 cub on display yesterday not sure what's up with the 2nd that was supposed to be on show (Aryo is off display after brusing his back legs) They were asleep in the house all day until late afternoon when we finally got to see them! Very sweet and getting so big now. Black Rhino off display all day not sure why. The new white faced Saki monkey's are now on show in Monkey Heights although they are still in quaratine.

Also went to Living Coast's this morning. I have some bad news about the Bank Commarat chicks that were brought back from South Africa at the end of July. Only 1 of the 8 that hatched has survived. The keepers are hoping that it will be a female so that it can be paired with 1 of the current males.

Ask any questions and I will try and answer them.

I really liked both Paignton and Living Coasts. I thought the enclosures were mostly a good size. The animals all seemed very happy too. Isn't too big either so can easily all be done in 1 day. Unlike Chester which I usually end up missing at least 1 thing out because it is simply so big!

What was going on with the tiger cubs? I saw two, and I knew one died. So they've separated one of them?
I went twice within the last 2 weeks, everything was really awake, even the crocs and echidnas were active! Will upload pics from my new camera later :)

Aryo is seperated from his mum and siblings because around the time of Kemala's death he was found to be limping and after a vet's exam it was found his legs were badly bruised. He is being kept apart to help his legs heal. Yesterday we could see Banda and the 1 cub were inside via the TV screen erected outside the exibit. The 2nd cub was nowhere to be seen. I am worried that something has happend to it too :(

I saw that too, I was there yesterday. The keepers there are elusive, was going to ask what was going on with the orangs as I saw the two German ones. The male fell off a climbing frame! Massive thud!

I totally agree with you about the elusive keepers. I would of asked about the missing tiger cub but there was no keeper round the exibit or that area in fact.

The tiger keepers have to cover a huge area at the zoo - mandrills, cheetahs, rhino, maned wolves... as well as the tigers and lions.

The ape keepers also have a large area to cover - ape house, swamp monkeys, lemurs, gibbons, pygmy marmosets....
What was concerning you about the orangs? I was there yesterday - they looked fine to me.

Perhaps as was suggested by a member once you should ask any questions you need answers to at reception. The keeper at the tigers today stood there and was asked one question .'Can I have a sticker please?

Today in the Aviary two of the keepers there Question asked by visitor.'Where are the Kangaroos? another question 'where is the Exit?
Is it any wonder they are elusive.
