Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo 2021

I have just arrived back from my day out at Paignton Zoo. Notes worth mentioning are that the ramp to see the Lions overhead was shut, as was any other means of getting to close to the Animals even the path that enables you to view the Maqaues was barred off. Regarding Animal news Joanna the Giraffe was refusing to enter the Giraffe House. Through the door that the Giraffes use too enter the building I could see that the glass was all boarded up.The Ostriches have been relocated to the former Anoa paddock meanwhile there only appeared to be a sole Heartman’s Mountain Zebra who looked pregnant. I could not see Yali the Asiatic Lion. If you would like to see some photographs, look at the Paignton Zoo picture section.

No fanfare from the zoo yet, but hard to miss if you're visiting - a female Hartmann's Mountain Zebra foal was born on 18 June , Jabali x Taru. Particularly good news as Taru rejected her last two foals. All is going well with this one :)

This is such fantastic news - very happy for the keepers and staff!

@Gigit when will the Zebras and Giraffes move into Duchess's former home? When I visited last week, the inside of the Giraffes House was closed to the public and the viewing windows were boarded up. I presume this means that the Giraffes and Zebras will move into their new homes imminently.

It will happen but the timescale is unknown. Some of the giraffe specific infrastructure would have to be moved from one side to the other (holding vet unit, separation pens, scale & feeding units), all at great cost. The herd thus far has refused to enter the elephant paddock despite the gate being left open for weeks at a time. The staff do not want to ‘knock out’ the whole herd. It’s complicated. They then have to think about what will fill the zebra enclosure. There was talk of an Asian mix but nothing certain. The zoo will have to recover somewhat from the pandemic and Living Coasts closure, rebuilding sensibly. News of the Bongo herd, baby Zebra & big cat moves will give a much needed boost in the short term.

I would hope they will develop that Asian theme more as you suggest. The loss of the central part and several hoof stock has left this part of the collection a bit unadventurous.

I'm not clear why they want to switch the giraffe to the other side...? Is it because its larger, or would they have the use of both the outdoor paddocks after that? In which case taking the dividing fence away might solve the problem of getting them used to it.

The zoo features in this week's local Herald Express following a three year old 'being attacked by an aggressive peacock'. He has a small wound on his forehead. His parents say there were two peacocks roaming around and 'some kids were looking at them but they weren't provoking or touching them'. That'll be a first then. They are demanding warning signs, of which there are already plenty around the zoo, and stopping the free-ranging peacocks from going in children's areas.

Some of the zoo visiting public are a dumb and sorry lot. It is indicative how far and detached from nature most of us have become and when we do get into contact with representatives of that nature they must act like our own and if not ... it has to be sign posted "people first". Just nature and animals and plants don't work that way, now do they .... not!.

Gigit - is this a repeat post? I’m sure this is the same as before? Sorry if I’ve got this wrong.

@Pertinax and @Gigit I have a question for you both. I was watching a episode from series 5 of Monkey Business, the program that was filmed at Monkey World. The episode featured the arrival of an Orangutan named Aris, from the Gorilla Nursery at Stuttgart. Do iver of you know if any of the Male Gorillas that reside at Paington were featured in the clips of Aris interacting with the Gorillas at Stuttgart?

Sorry but I have no idea.

Not sure what you mean? There was a previous peacock incident which resulted in warning signs being put up round the zoo but I can't remember exactly when.

@Gigit I think that @TriUK is saying that he\she thinks that someone may have posted about this incident prior to you. @Gigit I hope that my explanation helps you to understand what @TriUK was saying?

Dropped in for a mindfulness walk around the gardens today. The zoo looks so lush and ‘jungle-like’.
The path from the Peccary to the giraffe house was closed due to essential maintenance on the house? The gate was open agin between the paddocks but still no giraffe have ventured across. The Cusimanse enclosure says new arrivals will be coming soon. The tropical house seemed to have more bird life today but still no up to date signage?

I visited yesterday. I looked carefully for the birds in Reptile Tropics: I saw black-necked weavers, blue-crowned laughing thrushes, Edward's pheasants, a Rothschild's mynah and orange-headed ground thrushes, of course I probably missed some. There was a little mystery in the Amphibian Ark, next to the caecilians was a tank with a deep layer of soil and some pieces of bark with 2 shallow water dishes and a dish with pieces of fig and melon (or possibly pawpaw). No animals were visible. Best guess is some sort of invertebrate.
