Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo 2021

Thanks Gigit. That’s good you’ve seen all giraffes outside. Sad there is only one wolf (just as there are also singletons of RR Hog, Ostrich, Emu, Lion, Secretary Bird to name a few), but let’s hope things improve. The gardening team were working so very hard yesterday to tidy the borders up. The new rhino paddock fencing doesn’t ’feel’ great, but maybe it’s a zoo license requirement? An injection of cash is needed - anyone know a donor who could sponsor Paignton?

@TriUK I thought there was a Pride of 3 Lions. As far as I remember the Pride consists Paignton Born male Yali, and his fairly new Lioness companions Sita and Kali who moved to Paignton Zoo from Cotsworld Wildlife Park.

I keep checking the off show cages opposite the cassowaries to see if the lioness’s have arrived but nothing! It appears (only based on my summer visits) that the current male spends most of his time over near the border fence with the tigers.

There is a sign on the little house just below the baboons saying new arrivals are coming soon. The house has had pudu, agouti and cranes in it in the past but has been empty for a while (probably since the cranes moved on). Electric fencing is being installed along the top of the fence posts around the outdoor enclosure, which is currently divided in two. There are two compartments in the house. Photos in the gallery.

Some sort of work is going on at what was the crayfish pond next to the macaques. It's been out of use for several years.

Bamboo screening has been erected along the side of the maned wolf enclosure nearest to Monkey Heights.

The sign for the greater rhea in the enclosure behind the restaurant has gone - as has the rhea, as far as I could tell.

Hopefully the screening will encourage the Wolve(s) to use the paddock more during opening hours.
I take it the Lesser Rhea are still held in that enclosure behind the restaurant?
I’m glad there are finally developments and empty enclosures being addressed.

As far as I know, there has only been the one white greater rhea there for some time.

New arrivals due for the house below the baboons - very much a rumour that dik-dik are coming.

Lone female Red River Hog, Radish, has been joined by a youngster. I have no details but they seem to be getting along.

The cusimanse enclosure, empty since August 2020 when the last two males went to Newquay, has been cleared of all plant overgrowth.

Two turacos were flying free around the parrot aviaries/croc swamp area!

All good news.
There were Turacos in the off show area behind the Cottage aviary? Escape?
Do Dik Diks need an electric fence that high?
Hopefully the RR hogs will build their numbers up again. It would be good to have an Australasian species in the cusimanse enclosure next to Bruce, with the Kiwi in the Nocturnal House, but we’ll probably get meerkats or common mongoose!
At least there are developments!!

Turacos- yes, I imagine that's where they'd come from.
Fence - it seems unlikely! I think there's a mound in the middle of the enclosure though.....?

I wonder how many animals we can be ‘loaned’ from Newquay to encourage locals to renew their yearly membership?

I’m dithering about whether to visit Paignton, seems like they’ve shed a lot of bird species. Newquay hasn’t lost its sparkle, been recently and will be back in a few weeks.

You complain when there aren't new animals, yet complain when there are?
Thomas - I’ll retract my comments if it’s more than the expected Dik Diks & the welcome arrival of a new frog species. Excuse my ignorance - which new species are you referring to?

'Boardwalk Closure' - according to Facebook, the boardwalk between the zoo entrance and the tropical house is closed because it is being redeveloped. Work on this 'exciting project' will start asap. I wonder if it will involve animals? Rumour has it that it will be completed for next Easter.

I wonder if it will coincide with the removal of the railway track - perhaps a lakeside trail, passing the new Gibbon house and providing alternative big cat viewing?

Interesting ideas. I wonder whether redevlopement of that area could include an otter exhibit which would be popular with visitors and fill a gap in the collection.
