Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo 2021

I investigated further from a public road outside the zoo - the roof of the house is being removed. It was in a poor state.

@Gigit could this construction work be in preparation for Paignton welcoming Bactrian Camels back to the collection? I hope this is the case,as Camels were a great assest to the Zoo. I loved seeing the Bactrian Camels. At one point their was quite a large herd considering of Male Oscar and Females Carmel,Alice and Daphnie.

Are the rumours of the removal of The Jungle Express true? I would really miss the train as it was an usual attraction to find in a Zoo. Not only this but it was a nice scenic tour and a break from the animals.

It probably won’t happen, but after Pertinax dies I would like Kivu and Kiondo to leave so that a some Females could join Paignton’s Silverback N’Dowe. I believe Paignton’s Gorilla Enclosure is large enough to house a Breeding group of Gorillas. @Pertinax and @Gigit do you agree with me. I find it ironic that N’Dowe is now the dominant Silverback. He was the lowest ranking. Initially. Once Pertinax went into retirement Kiondo took on the dominant role for a few years. Speaking of Pertinax do you know how he is as of late? Pertinax is now the oldest Male Gorilla in Great Britain.

You may be under-valuing the need for bachelor groups:)

Hi everybody. Where at the zoo can I find the echidna & when is the best time to see them? They aren’t on the map, & the website says they’re near the tapirs who are also not on the map!
I’ll be visiting tomorrow.

He lives in the Nocturnal House which is currently off limits. He can go outside but on my morning visits since he moved there I haven't seen him.

Bruce the echidna doesn't show as well as he used to; he is very old now. His exhibit is beside the tapirs, he has a hutch outside and access through a pipe into the Nocturnal House, which has been closed to visitors since the first lockdown. You are only likely to see him in the afternoon at feeding time, provided the weather is good enough for him to be fed outside. I was lucky to get this photo on the 25th of October at 2 pm (corrected to GMT) - but he may be fed a little earlier now as the days shorten.

The zoo has announced the birth of a pileated gibbon (born roundabout the middle of October). The pair has two sons still living at the zoo, born 2016 and 2019.

Great news, Blackpool and Paignton have done very well with this species, even if they only produce male offspring. ;)

You're not alone!
I know, I shouldn’t feel too disappointed but it’s hard not to! I missed him when I visited in 2007 because I had no idea he was there, and now today. I don’t think I’ll have the chance to get there again before he goes but who knows.

Not sure how I feel about this news? Are the Newquay pride elderly (ex Longleat)?

Yes but not elderly, Ahmale, Boss & Samira were born at Longleat I believe, possibly 2014, parents were Hugo or Henry x Nikita I think.

I wonder why Paignton is going out of Asiatic Lions. The original plan was for Lionesses Zuri and Kali to move from Cotsworld Wildlife Park. I wonder if Yali will join the Lionesses at Cotsworld Wildlife Park instead.
