Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo Gorillas.

Stuttgart -
The whole old Ape house will be renovated and modernized for the Orangs so they will have a nice home too and much more space than nowadays.
Greetings from Stuttgart Velvet

It all sounds very exciting! How many orangs are at Wilhelma now?

Yes, it is exciting! *smile*
There are six orangs in two familys. Unfortunately I don't know the names but they are listed in the ape house. When I visit again I'll make a note.

Good morning!

Hello Velvet,

I managed to get some good shots of Kivu in one of the tall trees, He had learnt to blow raspberries really loudly apparently he had learnt this from Pertinax and a group of people were laughing at him, he was joined in another tree by Kiondu sucking his thumb then little N,Dowe joined them in another tree and he managed to climb higher than the other two they were so funny .Shortlyafter this Kivu got sick again and then N.Dowe but the good news is they have both recovered and are getting back to there cheeky playfull selves.

Time will soon come when the keepers will not be able to go in with the youngsters as allthough they play with the keepers they are now showing how strong they are and what starts as games could get out of hand. It is all part of the learning process and they look to there keepers for guidance. remembering they were not wild caught but raised in a nursary.Eventually they will all go on to start families of there own and so far that has been very succesfull.I dont think there are any right or wrong ways of doing things but they are a happy group as is seen in there play.
Happy new year

I wouldn't bank on that... whereas Paignton's previous males(apart from Pertinax) were all lucky enough to eventually join male/female groups, these youngsters are from a well represented line at Barcelona and of course there are several other bachelor groups in Europe. Also the number of new males recruited annually into breeding groups is far less than the available total held nowadays in 'reserve' in male groups. Already at both Port Lympne and Loro Park,Tenerife there are a large number(about 10 & 7 respectively) of fully adult 'bachelor' Silverback males, most of which have little hope of ever joining breeding groups.

I have got my hat on and i am standing in the corner [waiting for the bank to open].Its nice to learn things and i stand corrected sometimes we lose the bigger picture, We hope that they might move forward,.time will tell.
When I saw the group in Loro Parque there were 3 Silverbacks and one Blackback. The side where the waterfall is, was being cleaned so maybe some more were out the back.

He he (re the bank) Of course I'm not saying none of those Paignton youngsters won't eventually go into breeding groups, I'm not always right either..but I have a feeling this group may stay there a good while, longer perhaps than their predecessors did.

Nowadays I believe Loro Parc have six or seven males- nearly all of them are silverbacks and most of them stand little chance of ever leaving there.
