Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo News 2011

Gutted. Although not very active, it was nice to be able to get so close to them in the Swamp.

On other news, there is still no date set for the moving of the tigers. I just received an e-mail from the Head of Mammals.

Few births from a Paignton visit the other day.
3 Collared peccary piglets.
3 Capybara.
1 Mouse deer.
Hamadryas Baboons.
Ural Owl.
Nothern wood Owl.
Crested Screamer.

Work has also started on a outside enclosure for the building that use to hold Anoa. This building current contains 2 species Tenrec's but there is no indication on if this enclosure is for tenrec or another species.

Summer update.....moan

Just a 'quickie'......moan, whine....
1) I was so annoyed yesterday after visiting. The place was packed to the rafters which is great for the zoo, but, so many people were short changed at the Lemur exhibit! There is (as far as I could see) one remaining Red Ruffed. Guests were hurriedly eating their ice-creams, snacks etc as the sign asked them to do before entering only to find an empty woodland. We all know on Zoo Chat that collections have to wait for new animals, departures as per studbooks etc but Paignton has known for a LONG TIME that they needed replacement animals, even loaned Ring Tails to get through the summer. No signage, no apologetic primate keeper, NOTHING - just lots of hot & bothered guests feeling silly in an empty exhibit. Does it take 5 minutes to write a sign explaining the reasons? There are TV commercials in Devon showing Lemurs leaping high in the branches and interacting on the swing bridge!
2) The Lar and Grey Gibbons are STILL couped up in that poor excuse of a CAGE (not an exhibit) at the end of Orang lake! It's not acceptable!
3) The Takin were going to take up residence with the Barbary Sheep but in the end finances were pulled on the new planned fencing? Though geographically incorrect, it would have been an awesome enclosure!
4) The area next to the Tenrecs is another pond.
5) Hullabaloo Garden is being re-landscaped beautifully.
6) The Ostrich are now sharing the Zebra paddock experimentally - even whispers of another species joining them?
7) The larger parrot species seem to gradually being replaced with smaller species like Lories with ground dwelling pheasants?
8) Duchess is having another eye specialist visit her next week but the situation seems to be stable thankfully.
9) The Cheetah now have an enclosed shelter on a raised stand with grass roof?

Paignton's existing pair(ex Chester) have bred regularly since being at Paignton, but fail to rear any of their babies. I'm wondering if these new three will be allowed to breed or (given the problems Edinburgh experienced) whether steps will be taken to stop any further expansion of this new group.

Hello Bele,

Good news there is a single Maribou chick not out side yet but definitely born at the zoo. There are three Capybaras from this year. Four Screamer chicks. Three Ural chicks Three Great Grey chicks Three Pecarys!!!!!!!!!!Daphne the camel.

Hope that helped.

I would have thought she'll be moving on soon, as the last not so little terror has now moved it'll be a matter of weeks before Banda is moved on.

The little terror was amazing before he left he had grown bigger than mum and dad and was a stunner. I saw him as he left in his box looking very confused as i waved goodbye to him, and was told he was off on his holidays I will miss him allong with all his other siblings.

Dont know when or where Banda will be going shame she is going as she has proved to be an excellent mum.:(
