I might go tomorrow if it's nice. If I do i'll see if I can find one the big cat keepers.

Although I also want to work on the tan before heading to Chester, so more likely to go to Dartmoor instead.

Seriously, I don't think you fellow Zoo-chatters care a whole lot about the welfare of the animals in the zoological institutions we all talk about loving so much, otherwise, I wouldn't be the only one repetitively 'banging on' about this dire, tragic, unethical, wrong, cruel and embarrassing situation at Paignton, a place I cherish so much (minus the Grey/Lar Gibbon enclosure)!!

They can't do everything at once. The birds have been kept in a far worse situation than anything else. They are rightly being sorted. I am sure they have plans for the rest as well.

Are you a member? Have you donated any money towards improving the zoo?

Have you e-mailed the zoo to ask them instead of bitching about it on here?
 
I think Jordan-Jaguar was replying to my earlier question about why another thread mentioned problems with the spider monkeys, rather than stating the obvious. Paignton zoo have had two variegated spider monkeys for a couple of years now, well-beyond a quarantine period, hence my enquiry into why the entire group was still being held indoors. I have gathered from responses that more were imported, I am assuming that the group was introduced in a quarantine situation which sounds about to end.

From everything I have heard, it sounds as if the only thing preventing the gibbons having access to a superb enclosure is a connecting bridge to the island. If there is a good reason why this hasn't happened yet, I think Paignton should put up a simple sign explaining to visitors what the situation is, for their on PR benefit apart from anything.

Paignton have other gibbons; they don't need a mixed species pair in addition to the others there, they could move these to another collection that might have the time to accomodate them better. But it just looks as if they have been forgotten about, while other primates are added to the collection.

Emailing a zoo is much more convenient for them than posting, very publicly, criticism online, that finds its way into google searches the public might make on the zoo. I think the majority of criticism on here is constructive, and when it isn't, it is often replied to beautifully as we have seen in the 'are the elephants mad?' thread on Belfast zoo, turning the thread into a more meaningful discussion. I hope that Paignton will join the collections starting to engage with this site, if only to counter some of the criticism I'm sure it would rather not have to deal with.
 
My response may be a bit harsh, but Tri's post is the second with basically the same questions and complaints.

If Tri has tried contacting the zoo to ask those question and they tried to brush it off I could possibly understand the frustration.

When ever I have had a question and e-mailed the zoo, the response has always been polite and informative.

People must remember Paignton doesn't have anywhere to expand too. It is completely surrounded. Obviously there are areas which need improvement but which zoo/wildlife park doesn't.
 
Paignton is a very spacious zoo, I don't think it needs to extend. The issues people have raised seem to be relatively minor to fix, which is perhaps why they can appear frustrating to regular visitors.
 
Mulling over the gibbon situation, I've come up with a possible solution. The Pileated male is now alone in his two bedroom house by the station, with his own island. Why not move the Lar and the Grey in with him, alternating their time on the island?

I did NOT mean WHF! They currently have a successful pair who will hopefully breed again before long and splitting them up at this time would be an unwise move (+ there current male is Banda's half uncle because he's a half brother to her mother, Sarah)

Nias is also a male (I assume you meant to the WHF female, Puna who is also distantly related to Banda)
 
The newly arrived Red River Hog females have now been mixed with the resident pair, Pumbaa and Pablo.

The Red Pandas have recently given birth. The sign nearby refers to 'a baby'.
 
I was watching the Gorillas yesterday, when a stoat ran across their island. I've never seen one before, and wasn't sure if it was a weasel or stoat, it had a black tip on it's tail, so after a little research i've discovered it was a stoat. Gorillas upstaged for me yesterday.
 
I was surprised to see one run across the path near the Marabou Storks a few weeks ago!
 
There has been a large ammount of stoats this year .Nearlly all the rabbits have gone in the Zebra-Ostrich-Deer paddock also they can be seen in with the emu's chasing the rabbits around. I have lost count of them nearlly fell over two of them running across a path.Thank goodness Kumbuka hasnt got hold of one on the island someone could end up with a stoat hat or scarf as Kumbuka is a great shot................

Don't think we've ever seen a stoat at Paignton. Although have noticed the reduced number of rabbits on the past few visits.
 
Spider news update........Yo.The male JR was outside during the week he was trained to avoid the fence and was chilled out on a platform taking in a few rays.The gals were inside spitting chips and constantly peering out of the windows.They are hoping to let them out this week sometime yesssssssssss!
 
Grey & Lar Gibbons: Today I saw that Naomi, the elderly Grey Gibbon, has moved to the Pileated Gibbon house near the station.

I didn't see Blondie, the Lar Gibbon, there and I didn't go round to their house near Lemur Wood, so can't say where she is at the moment.
