Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo News 2012

Excellent news about the new arrival this morning. Looking forward to October. Finally getting a chance to go as the better half has a week off.

From the zoo's Facebook page:

Zoo keepers are keeping a close eye on a giraffe born at Paignton Zoo.
The new arrival was born at around 6:00am on Tuesday 4th September to mother Sangha and father Yoda.
Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said: “This is the first time we have had the mother give birth in the herd – it means that the youngster is out and about within hours of being born.”
The as yet unnamed calf stands at nearly six feet tall. The other youngsters at the Zoo are Tonda, who was born in February 2010, and Valentino, born on Valentine’s Day this year.
Father Yoda came from Givskud Zoo, Denmark, where he was born on 14th November 2004. He arrived in Devon in September 2006. Sangha, six and a half, who came from Liberec Zoo in Slovakia. The Zoo’s other female is seven year old Janica, who came to Paignton Zoo from Duvr Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic.
They are all Rothschild's (Baringo) giraffes. Rothschild's giraffes are classified as Endangered – there is a European Endangered species Programme for the species

With the two new calves they will need the space. Do they have any plans to move on 'Tonda'?

Given Tonda is now 2.5 years old and last time I saw him he was almost as big as mother, it'll soon be time for him to find pastures new. Hopefully he'll stay within the UK.

Tonda is moving soon............Chessington.
Hope the new calf has been feeding of mum as that was not the case yesterday......fingers crossed.

kkkp, any idea how soon?

Would like to see the not so little monster one last time. Good to see he is staying in the UK though.

The indoor facility at Chessington should be finished before the end of 2012 depending on the weather. The main exhibit will then be opened in March

The new female giraffe calf is out with the herd today. Sangha is being fairly attentive but hasn't let her feed yet. She's being bottle fed with a view to keeping her a bit hungry so that she'll persevere with mum.

Giraffe calves.

Update from the zoo today that the new Giraffe calf is now having to be handreared fully...

They've had to hand rear three calves from the new trio (Sangah, Janica and Yoda) the only one to date they've hand reared is 'Tonda' who is reportedly leaving for Chessington (?). It's weird and I've not heard of it before how they've only mother reared one calf out of four.

I think it was reported that there was actually something wrong with Sangha's first calf, which could be why she rejected him.

Interestingly, I saw Valentino (born in February to Janica) trying to suckle from her yesterday before she moved away.

I hope the operation has succeeded, her eye certainly looks so much clearer. Having seen her last week, I thought her overall condition looked quite good but I wondered if I were seeing her for the final time. I am much more hopeful now.

Red Panda cubs have today been examined for the first time: There's two cubs and they are both females :)

...Something of a female bias this year, Whipsnade and Dublin have also each got a set of female twins

From a 'low' of three(?)animals, this group seems to be climbing steadily again. It is pretty much the same size now as it reached in the old Monkey House.
