The newly enclosed area is for Sarus Cranes. There's been a pair living on Pelican Lake for some time. It may be them in here or additional cranes - I don't yet know.

One of last year's daughters is still here with parents Randy & Mandy.

The core audience is probably already noticed: For several days the two swamp monkeys are no longer seen in their enclosure in the monkey house. The background is that the breeding of these endangered primates has been concentrated in a few zoos together with the aim of possible new breeding pairs. The breeding of swamp monkey is coordinated in European zoos across the Endangered Species Programme (EEP). The merging of the few animals in zoos goes back to the proposal of the Coordinator for swamp monkeys after in recent years in the EEP zoos involved in the youth's failed to materialize. For both 13 and 14 years old Karlsruhe animals Paignton Zoo was selected in England.
In the early 1980s, a first pair swamp monkeys came to the zoo in Karlsruhe, which in the following decade had six offspring. A breeding females made then with a new partner until 2001 for seven births. Karlsruhe swamp monkeys were delivered to many European zoos in the conservation breeding program. From unexplained circumstances there was after 2000 in European attitudes no longer young. Also in Karlsruhe, a new breed of man Warsaw could not prevail. As lived in the beginning of 2013, only five European zoos four male and six female animals to provide in new groups of young people in the future.

In point of fact I have a feeling the female that just arrived from Karlsruhe was *the* last one to be born.
Another thing that must be recalled is that since the start of 2013, at which point the European population was quoted as being 4,6 at least another two individuals have died - the last Twycross individual, whose gender I do not recall, and the old Paignton male. So I would imagine the species is at the end of the road in Europe, sadly.

I'm wondering if the total of 4.6 referred to above excludes either, or both, the Twycross and previous Paignton males, if they died before the beginning of this year?- I rather hope it does.
Incidentally do you know what happened to the last ones at Twycross- did they die of natural causes or were they euthanased due to sickness/old age, or maybe some of each?
The Paignton male was certainly alive as of January 27th 2013, when I saw both individuals at said collection. So I would imagine the above total does include him, at least.

I visited the Zoo today (15th Sep) and noticed a few changes since my last visit in July.
Newly arrived female swamp monkey is locked in the house to settle in.
More signs up explaining about Duchess the Elephant. On tripadvisor
lately theres been quite a few people complaining about Duchess being alone. It also mentions that the Elephants enclosure is suitable for three female african elephants.
Another Cheetah? I'm sure they was only one after the female died a few months ago. The new Cheetah looked like a female and was laying down right by the viewing glass most of the day, completely unbothered by people.
One thing that hasn't changed though is the Kangaroo/Emu adoption board being out of order!

Still no sign of the male Swamp Monkey that accompanied her to Paignton from Karlsruhe.
The female cheetah arrived a couple of days ago - it seems she hasn't moved from that spot since then.

The female Cheetah was initally laying halfway up the left side of the enclosure. I actually did not see her at first. The male was lying near the centre in his usual spot and as I was completely unaware of there being another Cheetah I was only looking at him. It was only by chance I glanced in the enclosure before walking away that I spotted her staring back at me.

Two Giant Tenrecs were born on 14 June 2013 to mother 'Madam Mim', according to a sign, the first Tenrec births at Paignton.
According to my observations, a Mandrill was born on 11 September to Jumanji x Marta, the second baby this year
Two bits of good news, but the tenrecs haven't been trying very hard - they can have 20 infants in a litter!

In all the years I've been visiting Paignton, I think I can reliably say this is the first time they have ever had as many as seven (?) Mandrills.
