Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo News 2014

Baby Orangutan is now confirmed as another female: A vote has been opened with Herald Express to choose her name. The choices are

Bethari- meaning goddess

Eka- meaning first child

Elok- beautiful, awesome, jewel

Intan- diamond

Lintang- star

Ratih- meaning goddess of beauty

Natalia - meaning born at Christmas

A feeling of deja vu all over again ;) This quote is from post #91 on the 2013 thread:

"The zoo has put up collecting boxes for naming Mali's daughter, born in April. You vote by putting money in the appropriate box. The choices are Bethari, Elok, Intan, Kes, Lintang, Ratih, Tatau and Utari."

Gambira will know what's coming if she ever has a daughter ;)

For anyone who is going tomorrow: Please make a note that...

RHINO HOUSE CLOSED - Friday 14th February

You should be able to see male rhino, Manyara, in the outside show area, however the Rhino House itself will be closed. Sita is having a veterinary examination to see if she has any internal problems that may be the reason why she is not conceiving. Her last calf, Zuri, was born March 2007.

No public viewing as quiet is essential

Hopefully they will get some answers tomorrows :)

They could also be looking at the wrong animal.;) They have a different bull than the one that fathered 'Zuri'. 'Kingo' was mature and already proven at PL, I'm not sure this one is.....

An unwanted claim to fame, but at least they can be sure that the rhino house will be quiet for Sita's examination!

I did see them working on a large wooden structure the other day ;)

The new Pileated Gibbon pair, Hantu and Shockdy, are now together in the house by the station. Naomi, the Grey Gibbon, has moved into the former Swamp Monkey house, presumably temporarily as a sign says that monkeys will be arriving there soon.

Visited today.

The Cheetah Enclosure was closed off & the Cheetahs are off show. Trees had come down and damaged the fence, a section of chain link had been bent down quite a bit.

Work going on along Monkey heights. Looks like a new enclosure/s. I'm guessing replacement enclosure/s for those demolished with the small mammal house?

Baby Giraffe was out and about. It spent nearly the whole day outside with Valentino & Otillie. The adults stayed in most of the day. Later on the Calf & Valentino had a good run around together. Though the little calf couldn't keep up!

Maned Wolves were out almost all day. Since the young female arrived Smolis has been a lot more active. He even ran about after her whilst trying to nick her chicken, despite having his own. She of course defended it from him, a lot of hissing, growling and nasty noises/faces.

Other than the Cheetah's it looks like there wasn't any more serious damage around the Zoo after last weeks storm.

Where did both breeding partners originate / where born?

According to someone on Facebook, Jari and Sabal left today - Jari to Plankendaal and Sabal to Krakow.

Paignton's website says that female 'Zarina' will move to Frankfurt soon. Mother 'Indu' and daughter 'Maliya' are staying and will likely be joined by a male from ZSL in due course.
