Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

Also the zoo could perhaps benefit from employing some competent social media managers, as they managed to send up an update on the Swamp fundraising today with a broken link to the fundraising page.
Incredibly harsh - have you never made a mistake at work? I enjoy the output from the zoo and consider it one of the better zoos in terms of social media in the country.

Crocodile Swamp fundraising has reached 50% now but seems to have lost a bit of momentum. As I thought the Torquay United fundraising seems to be sucking the life out of any other fundraising in the area, as it's hit £150k in only three weeks! Also the zoo could perhaps benefit from employing some competent social media managers, as they managed to send up an update on the Swamp fundraising today with a broken link to the fundraising page.

People will only donate to a cause if it touches them, with that I mean emotionally. Someone may only donate to the zoo if they are regular visitors, have a family member working there etc. Same as the local football team, if someone's child/grandchild/nephew etc plays for the team and they only have £10 spare then it's obvious where they'll send it.

On the subject of the link, technical errors happen as do human mistakes, please don't pull someone down because of a mistake, their job is possibly at risk as well as trying to save a place they love.

Not that harsh when it's their job to drive engagement and drive people towards the fundraiser. It's basic skills for a social media manager to check their posts. As I speak the link is still broken, it could well have cost some donations by people who might have done it spur of the moment but lost that initiative once they couldn't get through to the page, especially for those not tech savvy enough to hunt down the giving page manually. It's an easy enough mistake to make, it's also an easy enough mistake to fix. I'm all for the Crocodile Swamp initiative but feel that the campaign has been a bit lacklustre. I really hope that they reach the 100% amount in the next few months. Unlike some I'm actually fairly positive about the zoo and think that long term they will turn it around, which is why I've been critical about silly little mistakes like this.

@Embu said it best. You have no idea what folks are going through at the zoo, it costs nothing to be nice @Gulls86.

Can we please remember that what we post on these threads can be viewed by anyone that isn't a member as was in my case following for years before joining. There maybe followers that work in the admin, food, retail parts of Paignton who's jobs may well be at risk. As the season is coming to the end people may well be laid off or let go to save £ and who's futures are now uncertain.

I agree, there must be that feeling, who's next?.Unfortunately this feeling of the unknown will be happening at other zoos going through the same experience.

Changing the tone(it's getting a bit depressing) I'm guessing the reopening of the swamp, subject to how much they can raise, will be a big draw for visitors?

Obviously with he railway reopening will be an extra income but are there any other pay as you go attractions on site? Curious to know how else they can raise extra income

Yes indeed, I’m curious as to what animals will go back in? I’m assuming they can reinstate breeding programmes for Cuban Crocs & Tomistoma, perhaps? I recall being told that the large water monitor is residing in Khaleesis (Komodo) old enclosure. I think that a new Komodo of similar size would be a good draw, along with some fully grown giant pond turtles, although the previous snappers were great, most people missed them as they were so shy/secretive. I’d love to think that some butterflies could be added too?

Not to mention an unlucky bird that gets snapped up by a crocodile if the enclosures aren't netted over...
I do feel that the building, like the tropical house, would benefit from one corner or area being netted to house birds. The loss of bird song is a huge shame and is a real loss to the senses.
It would be relatively easy to net around the Lily pond and/or the old snake/komodo pit.
As I said before, butterflies would be a great addition!

Butterflies were added before but need replenishing often.

I had a really relaxed walk around the zoo today. It was pleasantly quiet, warm and many of the ridiculously overgrown areas have been cut, whilst keeping selected areas ‘wild’. It looked & felt good, pretty much everywhere on site.
A number of vivariums are empty in the tropical house. The large female Tomistoma can be seen in the pool through the exit door in Croc Swamp. There are Blue Monitors in the old monkey house reptile nursery which would look great back on display as they’re so active. There are new tanks for Crocodile and Emperor newts in the Amphibian Ark - this area is fantastic when it’s quiet, a real treat!
Some of the entrance pathways at the stalled Baboon Hill enclosure were being fenced off today ahead of sheep being added to manage the grass. Though it’s ‘better’ than being left empty, that will be three sheep enclosures in one exotic zoo - could they not add Dartmoor & Exmoor ponies - they wouldn’t need stabling?
It looks like the Cockatoos have gone or been moved off show. The Red Headed Cranes are back in the enclave aviary and the oriental stork has gone back in with the Scarlet Ibis.
The screening has been removed along the fence at the pelicans and it was joyful to be so close to them swimming! Two Sacred I is have been added to the pelican exhibit.
The old small monkey aviaries, accessed by overhead chutes above the visitor walkway have been removed, along with the ‘porch’ at the squirrel monkey house.
Overall, despite the recent wave of redundancies (mainly to admin & education staff), the zoo felt positive, and it wasn’t just the weather!!

Hi, does anyone have any updates on the arrival of new Takin, the loss of one of the female Bongo or the long term plan for Rhino at Paignton?
More worried about the takin and rhino than the bongos....! I do hope present curatorial management takes a more progressive look at the collection and how to turn the financial limitations around to disable to zoo to improve or develop.

On the Halloween post they mention peccary’s.

Am I going senile or do I not remember seeing them?
