Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

Are there plans in place to remove birds from the desert house, and if so why? Unless I am mistaken, with the reptiles having already left, that will leave the building without any captive inhabitants. I understand the significance that the botanical collection holds at Paignton, but an empty building, especially one that was as good as this, is a very questionable decision to say the least.

It's not a very secure building though and regularly gets damaged by the increasingly high winds.

Yes, there is a temporary aviary in place and I’m fairly confident that all birds will be removed prior to January’s re-opening. The avian flu and roof issues were both reasons for the decision. The tropical house has lost so much vibrancy, soul and life since birds were removed in there. I do hope the new master plan makes up for this latest loss.

And most importantly - when will the Nocturnal house reopen so we have a fighting chance of seeing Bruce!?
In the Summer, I managed to get a sneak-peak round the corner of the tapir enclosure and saw Bruce running about! I managed to get a couple of ‘okay’ photos.

It is now one week since PZ closed their doors for the annual maintenance fortnight, which now seems to be a common strategy amongst medium sized zoos?
There was a promise from the PR team to keep members updated about their progress, which apart from mentioning a reptile tropics (tropical realm) revamp, nothing has been communicated.
My hopes are that the Pileated Gibbons are released back onto their island, the Pelican, Flamingo, Red Panda, Baboon and Giraffe enclosures are all progressed significantly, but most importantly, the management team are preparing to announce the long-awaited master plan.

Yes, indeed I too hope that the new Red Panda Enclosure will have progress.

English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark Welcomes Wild Plant Trust As New Geopark Core Partner • Paignton Zoo

PZ has partnered with The English Riviera and UNESCO to help promote & protect the coastal Geopark.

In other news…., a £2 charge is now in place per child for non-members to use the indoor play area. I’m not sure this is a good idea at a time when so much of the zoo is still closed or under construction?
It also alienates what is essentially the core audience for any zoo. I wonder what sort of analysis they did before deciding this..

Paignton Zoo has announced the new addition of a baby area to its indoor soft play centre, Jungle Fun. The area will cater to children aged between 0 to 12 months, and has been designed by a local business.

And…Maintenance Update!
Including:
Some landscaping has been done around the lake, probably where the railway once was and the installation of a new Baboon catch cage in preparation for their big move later in the year.
Apparently there will be more updates across the week.

Apparently “this will allow us to raise funds to continue upgrading Jungle Fun. We have some really exciting plans for the future!”

It’s a short sighted decision that will be perceived as greedy by tourists and non-members residing in the SW. it is ‘cheeky’ in my opinion, at a time when so many exhibits and facilities are closed for re-development or have been erased from the zoo map entirely!

I visited yesterday, on a very brief walk around some of the site.
All of the birds have now been removed from the desert house. It feels very strange indeed! My guess would be that meerkats would move in when the baboon rock area gets re-developed, or, vivarium pods will be installed to exhibit some of the large collection of off-show reptiles?
The tropical house has had some tree/plant work done and the open top (tortoise & turtle) enclosures have had new lighting & shelters installed. The species line up is the same.
The rhino house was blocked off completely, so I hope both individuals are ok and well.
The fencing around the capybara and echidna enclosures have been removed and blocked off, with a generic ‘…change is coming…this area will be redeveloped…’ with no indications of what will happen there.
There have been no further works on the new baboon enclosure during the two week break.
The wooden walkway works in monkey heights have now been completed but the Pied Tamarin enclosure is still blocked off and empty.
The giraffe were still conditioned to stay in their house and tiny hard stand, with access to the main elephant paddock still open.
I’m sure there was lots of change and maintenance works done in off-show and keeper prep areas, but in all honesty there was very little evidence of change.
There were three members of staff monitoring the children’s soft play signing in and non-member entrance fees.
The cages to move the baboons have been installed.
I could still see a crocodile through the door of the swamp building.
