Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

Visit today,
One of the Takin has passed, unfortunately. Confirmed.
The Baboon house build has been delayed and will now not be ready for the summer as planned.
The Indo-Chinese box turtles were attempting to mate, so fingers crossed!
New animals (unspecified) will apparently begin arriving in the coming weeks with empty areas beginning to be re-stocked - let’s hope this pans out!

Any idea why the hold-up? An unfinished build won't look good though I'm sure they have a good reason for the delay. Great pity though.

Does anyone know if the zoo plan to get anymore North African red necked ostrich?
I doubt it. Paignton are drastically reducing their bird collection and seem hell bent on moving as many birds as possible into one annexed area of the zoo - I’m no expert, but if bird flu is the reason for this, is it not more sensible to have birds spaced apart to avoid spreading the infection at close quarters - the Ostrich female may end up at Wild Place as there is no point keeping a rarity like her alone?

It’s not to avoid spreading bird flu but ensuring they’d be able to stay open by closing one area of the zoo off. With birds spread out, as previously, the whole zoo would have to close. A real shame though to have to do this.

I get it, but in my naivety or complete stupidity, I don’t see Paradise in Hayle or other collections doing it, so either Paignton are planning way ahead of the curve, or Torbay is projected to be ‘hit harder’ by future AI outbreaks geographically, or it’s a management decision to focus less on birds in the fight against species decline?

I get the distinct impression that current management just doesn’t like birds:)

Vaccinate birds in the collection (instead of holing them up response, massive disruption or reducing the bird collection ...)!

The whole rationale around veterinary guidelines is wrongfuwly handled with authorities protecting livestock industries that have created the issue from becoming an epidemic (and mainly now affecting wild bird populations as we do nothing to effectively control the zoonosis).

There’d be nothing left if Paradise followed the same route

Does anyone know now what management really wants and what are the future plans now the old Masterplan of a few years is obsolete?

Originally the plan was to get a new male (from Germany if I can remember) and the pair would be mixed in the large savannah complex. Due to Complications from Brexit and then the Pandemic, both plans are on hold.
The large Savannah complex will now take a long time to come to fruition as it requires the giraffe herd to make their own way over to the elephant paddock (only one individual has done it so far), in order to sort the indoor furniture and create the new indoor viewing areas. By the time this all happens, I doubt the keepers will want to spook the herd further by adding Ostrich? It’s all very frustrating but it will be a good exhibit in the end I’m sure!

The new Pelican exhibit which is the old Tapir/Capybara paddock, is coming along nicely. I believe this will be a really good opportunity to see these birds up really close. As it will be netted, I’m sure they’ll add other birds, perhaps spoonbill or Ibis.
Does anyone know if the zoo has kept the Tinamou from the desert house?

The Savannah Project was scrapped well before Brexit and the Pandemic due to the TB issues.
Yes, apologies, I was only referring to the new ‘Savannah’ exhibit which comprises , so far, of just Hartmanns Zebra and Giraffe.
The original Savannah plan was to add Aardvark, Warthog and a walk-through vulture aviary. This was all scrapped due to TB.
The new area was at one point going to include off & on show areas on the footprint of the camel enclosure and old Takin area. This was then going to house Banteng or Gaur, but then they found aspestos in the barn roof and it’s still just sat there waiting to be deconstructed.
