It goes without saying that we all wish the best outcomes for Pertinax and thoughts are with his incredible staff - wishing the speediest of recoveries for this gentle giant.View attachment 710558
Pertinax has passed away (PTS). Devastating news. However, he was long lived and contributed to the European batchelor programme with distinction.
Heartfelt sympathies to all staff, past & present, that worked with him. A gentle giant - he will be missed!
Paignton Zoo Mourns The Loss Of Pertinax, The UK's Oldest Gorilla • Paignton Zoo
Out of interest, and to slightly deviate, who holds the record for oldest UK silverback? I’m assuming it is/was Nico at Longleat.
Your namesake led a good life and passed away at a respectable age for a gorilla silverback.A sad day indeed though I wasn't too surprised to hear this after the announcement of the 'medical procedure'. Males of his age often don't come back from that although I note he was PTS. He was the oldest male in the UK but not the oldest gorilla (Howletts have older females).
I haven't seen him for a number of years now but remember his arrival together with his same-aged companion 'Klaus' from Koln Zoo as the potential founders of the new Paignton bachelor group. But after being lifetime 'friends' they suddenly fell out after moving there and Klaus was moved to Bristol, leaving Pertinax as the senior male among the group of incoming younger males. In the early years he certainly kept them in check but over time his role changed rather to something of an outsider, particularly as the three more recent males matured, resulting in his permanent seperation for his final years.

A sorry loss all the same.
@Pertinax, right ... I just assumed ... Sorry about that!.
I guess some people on here presume he was my 'namesake ...
The funny thing is he wasn't really.... When in the very early days of Zoochat I decided to change my name from what was really my house(!) _Grantsmb. I just
picked it at random. I did know him obviously but no really close link. But maybe that makes him a namesake anyway .I am certainly sorry he has gone.
So these have gone into the old Tapir are, which is a sensible place to exhibit them, at least short term. There was a suggestion they were (are) going into the Desert house?Cape porcupines have arrived from Lotherton.
The Baboon exhibit will now not get completed until at least next summer.
That is ... summer of 2025?The Baboon exhibit will now not get completed until at least next summer.
No, it is on the site of the former mountain zebra paddock and stables.I apologize if this has been answered, but is the new baboon enclosure removing the crocodile house?
