Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

It's an interesting question considering I dare say they've paid more than £15k for the half completed Baboon relocation. Probably something to do with the change in CEO no doubt. I'm not against a fund raising for the exhibit, the zoo is an asset to the area that needs to be supported but there's definitely been some muddled decisions getting made there by previous management.

Hopefully this is all short term pain over the next 18 months or so as the remainder of the covid loan gets cleared off. If we continue having weather like this, at least the zoo should be busy in August. I just want to see the zoo thriving again, I'm of an age when I was a kid during the 90s and into the 00s, when the zoo was constantly being developed and transformed and always seemed to be developing something new and exciting. It'd be nice to return to those days.

This isn’t the best type of zoo visiting weather as everyone will head to and stay on the beach.

In principle I am very much in favour of restoring the Crocodile Swamp, but I can't help having some nagging doubts. How structurally sound is the building? If the cost of heating is a major concern, could they lower the roof to avoid heating so much empty space? Could solar panels and/or heat pumps reduce running costs enough to justify their higher capital costs?

As a matter of fact I believe she died quite a while ago now!

Last I heard, the only stock remaining to be moved out were a single Cuban Crocodile and Sunda Gharial apiece.
Looking at Zootierliste, it would suggest, one of the Sunda gharial ended up at Call of the Wild Zoo. I remember hearing some years ago that Paignton acquired a single female hybrid Cuban crocodile from Sea Life London, is this the individual still at Paignton?

In another positive move, I am reliably informed that the nocturnal house is to reopen as of today.
Very good news. Thanks Dave. Perhaps the Loris to the left and the Echidna/Potoroo to the right? Would be good to get the Kiwi in there if it could be worked at some point?

It would be a dream to have the Kiwi on display!

Re:Kiwi
I recall on the day of my Kiwi Encounter [which one can deduct was the day my profile was taken too], it was noted how Manu came to Paignton with the aspiration of eventually pairing him up; albeit, they would have to prove that they could care for a singleton kiwi before introducing a mate. Not really sure how long such a thing takes however... though they did say that should a mate arrive for Manu then there would be a more extensive housing for kiwi!
I will say that whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my experience ... I fully feel that not all visitors may wish to pay the premium - and he's such a cool bird that it would be great that regular visitors got to see him methinks! Though I do question whether the Nocturne house has the room for a kiwi ... on my 2017 visit I recall noting how small it was.

Where is Manu actually located?

The aviary Manu is in displays kakariki during the day time, and as stated is close to the ABC/roadrunners.
During the day he sleeps in a nest box in a shed, and at night has access to multiple aviaries.

Correct, ironically, his outside space is actually very good, which includes access into the Kakariki & Toco toucan/Pink Pigeon aviaries. The Roadrunners (next to the Kiwi CCTV) have moved opposite the Bongo & have been replaced by Toco Toucan.
The old Penguin Pool/Fruit bat enclosure which now has the Echidna/Potoroo mix would work as outside space for Manu the Kiwi, except he’d be asleep at the wrong time, so could rotate with another Australasian species? It’s all positive nonetheless.

Shared on social media this morning - indoor enclosure for echidna and potoroo. Former lesser hedgehog tenrec enclosure now housing African pygmy mice.
Good news. Behind the tenrec/now mice tank is a huge indoor enclosure that last housed Sloth & Bushbaby - shame this can’t be utilised for the Loris or Kiwi?

Visited this afternoon, no news but a few comments :

Nice to see Figs new indoor enclosure, she was hiding on top of her nest box but we could see the top of her head at least.

How many Bongos do they have now? I thought Bowie made 3, but the keepers were putting them away and there was only 2?

Lots of work done on Monkey Heights, looking much tidier. They’ve cleared (and added decking) behind the fencing opposite the armadillo. Possibly room for something new?

Desert house has had loads of plants added, it’s starting to look really good in there IF an animal is joining the space. (We’ve still never seen the porcupines in their current enclosure)
