paignton zoo is a good zoo,the 2 asiatic lion's mwundu and indu are very magnifcent looking lion's are they a breeding pair.the 3 sumatran tiger cubs are growing up fast even though one has left.banda has done a good job looking after them...the baboon enclosure is brilliant even though it was built in 1970.is there just one short beaked echidna...the gorilla enclosure is good for young bachelor's.doesz anybody if the bornean orangutan's are breeding.the monkey heights is a main attraction the house is great and the monkey's themselves are brilliantthe black rhino's manyara the male and the 2 female's zuri and i dont know the other one's name unfortunalty are looking very good the gibbon's are also very nice and LOUD may i add any more news please good you write back

Mwamba and Indu are meant to breed but that is yet to happen. There are only two tiger cubs left as one died and one moved.

Is the camel paddock still against houses, I remember seeing this when I visited, my initial thought being, I would love to see camels out of my bed room window in the morning!

Aswell, will Paignton move away from Elephants one their last elephant dies? I believe it would make a nice Black Rhino paddock.

I wouldnt think they would get any more elephants. I personally would like to see them make the whole area for giraffes and maybe mix another species with them.

The plan when the last elephant passes is to open it up for the giraffes. The black rhino's have a fair amount of space it is just badly organised.

I would imagine the chances of the lions breeding are passing. They have been together for a fair few years now. They get on brilliantly. I would imagine after this amount of time they treat each other more like brother and sister. The last lion cubs were in 1998. Would be great to see more little fur balls running around.

The camels are still at the top of the hill with the bungalows behind them. Some of the houses around the zoo have wonderful views.

Baboon Rock was built in 1973. It is the next major enclosure to undergo a revamp when the funds have been raised.

Jordan the other female Black Rhino is called Sita, she is Zuri's mother.

The first lion cubs where in 1998, the last lion cubs born where in 2003 and where Indu (still residing) and Sohan (now at Ostrava zoo)

Thanks for correcting me. I didn't realise they had anymore. Only really started to get interested in the zoo again in the past 3 years.

3 litters - 1998 was 0.2, 2000 (i think) was 0.1 and 2003 was 1.1

The current pair are a failure though and one needs to be moved on, preferably the male

It's a shame because they get on so well together. Although I fear that may be part of the problem. They are more like brother and sister than a mating pair.

has any work been started on the new baboon enclosure, and will it simply be for the baboons, are there any satellite enclosures for other species?

I didn't notice anything going on over the weekend. I think they still need to raise a large amount of the money before they even begin to start the work.

Hopefully it wont be to long before the work starts. Although still a reasonable enclosure for them it is starting to look tired. As to what will be housed in the new enclosure, I haven't got a clue.

If I remember i'll ask a member of staff next time I visit. Probably wont be for a couple of weeks though, more likely when the kids have gone back to school.

Finally went through the photo's from last weekend. Here is a one of the baby Emperor Marmoset.

I know it is a little fuzzy, it seems the camera and I have fallen out for some reason at the minute.

I was there yesterday, they are still a fair way off their fundraising target for baboon rock.

Watched the Elephant for a while it seemed agitated. It was bashing it's tusk against the Cables that line the enclosure inside the house, as if it were trying to rip it out. It was also making a roaring noise. I'm not sure what plans they have in store for it, nor do i know anything about keeping elephants, but could it be integrated with other elephants, or is it better off on it's own? I know it was with the other Elephant for many years and the other Elephant was of a different species, could this prevent it being mixed with it's own species? I'd be interested in other peoples views

I think the plans are to let her live out her years on her own. I think the keepers fear it would be to difficult for her to be introduced to another group due to her age, she is almost blind as well. Also the stress of moving her at the age she is would probably be a bit to much for her to handle.

It is a shame but keeping her until she passes is probably the lesser of two evils.

I would probably imagine that trying to introduce her to another group would be very difficult because since 1977 hen they both arrived from Longleat the seemed very happy with just each other for company.

I have a slight inkling that after the demise of the old ele, that a full re-evaluation and remodelling of both the giraffe and rhino yards will be in the offing to produce a more robust savannah-themed area to the locality.

More than likely the case. If they incorporated the space in which the zebra presently reside they could make stunning mixed enclosure.

Its interesting to note that she is also currently the only Elephant in SouthWest England and far beyond- the next nearest being Whipsnade/Howletts/West Mids- all many miles away.

Noah's Ark might alter that in due course if they get elephants..

Kumbuka was in a foul mood on Saturday. Smashing and banging the house door!

Will be very sad when she goes. It seems the only time the wife and I will see elephants anymore is when we visit Chester Zoo.
