The Pairi Daiza greenhouse is likely not far from completion, and I'd love to speculate on which animal species might be housed there.

I've already read that it will include manatees and crocodiles. The manatee is probably going to be the Caribbean manatee, but the rest remains open to speculation.

As I said before, there are a lot of rumors that are likely untrue circulating about this greenhouse, not in the least caused by a social media department that rather focuses on the 20th photo of a lion cub than on actual big developments. I've heard gibbons, komodo dragons. However, if we look at trusted sources, it gets more interesting. Eric Domb himself confirmed that there will be shark tanks, jaguars etc present in the greenhouse. Other sources such as newspapers stated that not all plants will be south American, and in fact almost all will be southeast Asian. And then from an insider I heard that Parson's chameleons had arrived for the Sanctuary.

The original idea was South and Central America I thought. I would like them to get jaguars after the jaguars in Zoo Antwerp aren’t there anymore. I also heard rumours of the pygmy hippos, komodo dragons, black panthers, golden-cheeked gibbons, clouded leopards, sharks, … to be included in the Sanctuary greenhouse. There are lots of possibilities for this project.

It's really amazing that such a massive project like the Sanctuary - the largest green house in zoo in the world that costs more than 100 million € - is being built almost to completion with hardly any confirmed information on what will be finally included as animals or even geographical focus area.

What is known / rumored according to my knowledge so far is the following:
  • It covers a surface of 200x200 meters (4 hectars) but due to different levels inside the actual surface shall be 7 hectars
  • It shall cover three bio-zones - the ocean, tropical rain forest and dessert with the main surface being dedicated to the tropical rain forest
  • There will be 88 hotel rooms spread around the Sanctuary allowing to sleep under water, on the ground and on tree level close to different animals
  • There will be 'aqua park' linked next to the Sanctuary allowing guests to go swiming in a set-up that is oriented at the mexican cenotes (opening about 1 year after the Sanctuary)
  • The ocean part shall contain a huge aquarium for sharks and rays (rumors said the main tank shall be 12-15 million liters which would would make it one of the biggest aquarium tanks in the europe
  • The dessert part shall contain huge cactus of 15-20 meters in height - I've not heard any information which animals could be in that section
  • The rain forest part is the one with most rumors and discussions
    • Until some months ago I thought it shall only cover South America as also inital design pictures predominantly focussed on animals from that region (manatees, crocodiles, jaguars, giant otters, different monkey and bird species)
    • In the meantime rumors cover also many animals from other continents as also mentioned above already
What I'm curious about is which animals already located elsewhere at PD will transition into the Sancturay (e.g. from the Oasis) and what will they be replaced with.
I also hope that they will not only focus on large animals like the mammals and sharks mentioned above but also include a wide selection of various smaller birds, reptiles, fishes, amphibians and insects including hopefully many of them freely roaming through the Sancturay.
