Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2019

Pairi Daiza just announced on their Facebook page that sadly baby Sumatran orangutan Sungai, born October 30th, 2018, unexpectedly passed away last night.

The whole explanation of the cause of death given in the text, linked below (in Dutch, unfortunately) is a bit strange I think.

They speak about a congenital malformation of Sungai's jaw that led to him not being able to suckle anymore and him getting weaker. Medical examination and medical care could not save him as he was already too weak to recover. I find it a bit strange that this problem only leads to issues in an animal after nine months, then kills it seemingly very quickly.

Possibly as he grew the jaw deformation got worse, at least that is what they imply, so the malnutrition worsened rather suddenly toward the end when it was too late to save him.

A few weeks ago a male Blue sheep(Bharal) joined the two females that I saw in May. Is this the first male they have had or is it a replacement? And anyone know where he/they came from?

It is the first male they’ve had - believe he came from Prague

As far as I know there has been a male blue sheep since the arrivals of the animals. I' m pretty sure I saw it in an episode of their tv-documentary but I never saw it in the exterior.

Weird....I could’ve sworn they only ever had two females. I think I remember them posting about their new arrival earlier in June...

Definately only two females in May and now news of this male's recent arrival. What I wondered was if they had lost a previous male or not. Probably answer is no?

Believe in classic Pairi fashion they started with only a single sex group (so the females) and then added a male later. Same happened with their Japanese macaques recently - when myself and @TeaLovingDave visited a couple weeks ago I noticed a male in with the three Amsterdam females they previously had; asking a keeper I discovered he arrived from Wilhelma in the past few months.

Someone on another site also said its the first male Blue sheep they've had, and also mentioned Prague.

Random question so feel free to move this if it is in the wrong place. I have just been reading about the opening of The Last Frontier and it got me interested in the growth of the zoo, and wondering when the other worlds opened. Apart from the actual park opening in 1993, all I can find is that Kingdom of Ganesha opened in 2009. Anyone able to help?

That is a question more easily asked then answered, as many of the worlds have significantly grown since the official opening and the official guides do not give such information. But this is something of an overview, mainly from the French wikipedia:

2000 Oasis
2001 Nautilus, Aquarium
2001 Lemur islands (since then significantly reduced in size)
2002 Algoa Bay (SA fur seals)
2003 Mersus Emergo (reptile boat)
2004 Andalucian garden
2006 Chinese Garden
2007 Bird of Prey aviaries
2009 Kingdom of Ganesha
2010 Australian zone
2012 African zone
2013 Kingdom of Ganesha extension 1 for Elephants
2014 Chinese Garden extension Snowleopards, Takin, Giant Panda
2015 Kingdom of Ganesha extension Leopards & Tigers
2016 Kingdom of Ganesha extensions Orang utans
2016 Australian zone extension with Koala (2017 with Tasmanian devil)
2016 Gorilla volcanoes
2017 Seal and Penguin enclosure
2018 Spix ara
2018 Renovation of greenhouses, now with Birds of Paradise & Clouded leopards

Great and really impressive overview!

As already mentioned in a post on Snowleopards trip their are the following plans for future expansions discussed:
  • Conservation Center for critically endangered birds (autumn 2019)
  • Land of cold with polar bears, walrus, amur tigers, penguins and reindeers and different accomondations (end 2019/ early 2020)
  • New parking area (several times larger than the existing one) (in 2020)
  • 9th World: Dessert
  • 10th World: South America (according to discussions in the French Forum 'leszoosdanslemonde' potentially including a 'dome' for tropic animals from all over the world)
  • Overall objective for number of beds at Pairi Daiza Hotels is 5000 - including new offerings in the existing worlds (e.g. Middle Kingdom)
In addition it can be expected that like in the past also in the future there will be minor or larger changes in the existing worlds.

Thankyou for your reply - it's amazing how often this zoo adds exhibits/worlds!

Thankyou for replying. It looks like this zoo is never going to stop expanding!!

Pairi Daiza announced today the start of the construction of their new parking which will be covered by a huge (10 hectar) solar system which will produce more than 20 GW/a - significantly more than the consumption of the entire parc. The additional power will be offered to guests to load their electric cars and fed into the public net.

This will be the largest solar system on top of a car parking in the world and the largest solar system facility in Belgium. The annual savings of carbon dioxide is estimated to be 6.860 tons.

The project is planned to be finished in spring next year.

And so my now irreversible decision to postpone my visit from today (Friday) to tomorrow looks like it might be a serious mistake. :o

They won't be visible anyway, so I doubt whether it will be any more crowded than on any other summer day...
