Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2022

On January 23 of this year, the last Amazilia hummingbird from Pairi Daiza died, so there are now no hummingbirds left in the animal collection of Pairi Daiza. The hummingbirds were housed in the Oasis greenhouse. In my opinion, hummingbirds will not return until the new and much larger tropical greenhouse is opened, the construction works of which have already begun.

I mean that introduction of Nasibu to the whole PD (and thus also seperate (touching/smelling) introduction with the mangabeys)) was pretty fast. I know some zoos take like a month or two for slow introductions. Felt like PD rushed this?

I don't understand why Pairi Daiza did this introduction so quickly, I expected them to do it when Nasibu is a bit more at ease. He has lived alone in Rotterdam for many years so he is not so used to other gorillas, how could he get used to another species so quickly. I don't think Pairi Daiza takes bad care of its animals and the keepers will put many energy to provide excellent care for the animals, also the vet team is probably 1 of the better ones in Europe or maybe even the world, but surely this is a fatal mistake. Of course something can always go wrong when combining species, but this introduction and combination was (it seems to me) not planned very hard in advance.

The article below, in French, discusses at length the history of the Cambron Abbey, the remaining buildings of which form a major part of the decor and landscape of Pairi Daiza.

The article also mentions that the park and the heritage services of the Wallonia government, after archaeological investigations last year, plan to restore and repurpose the old abbey tower by late 2023. It is planned for the building to be restored, for the original tower spire to be reconstructed, for a monumental bell to be installed and for the construction of a viewing platform and stairs to turn the tower into a viewing tower.

It seems like it will be quite a prestigious project.

It remains unclear to me what will be done with the former raptor show site at the base of the tower, and whether that show will ever be able to return. At least during the construction project presumably construction equipment might be placed in this area.

Its certainly not the first time a Gorilla has killed a monkey in a mixed exhibit. I think PD saw it done successfully at other zoos and thought it would work for them with any mix too. I think they have Colobus in with the bachelor males also? These mixes work most of the time and often look 'charming' when the monkeys 'tease' or play with the bigger gorillas, but there's always the hidden possibility lurking that a gorilla can/will kill a monkey.

The park posted a speech made by Éric Domb to celebrate its 28th anniversary. According to the post (which I translated by using Facebook’s translation engine) there are four more worlds to be designed. Other than the Amazon world I was not aware about the plans to have three more worlds. Was this common knowledge prior to the anniversary post? What might the other three worlds be?

To my knowledge there are ideas for a Japanese world near the Mersus Emergo reptile house, and last year I saw a road sign for a world called "Steppe".

Road sign for future new development "The Steppe"? - 2021-09-03 - ZooChat

On a side note, I received a mail news letter from the park yesterday, and among the species that were mentioned for recent births were Australian pelicans and Lyle's flying foxes.

The fourth one (besides Steppe,Japanese, Sanctuary) was to my knowledge Blue Oasis. What exactly that means is to me unknown

Blue Oasis ? Would that be an aquarium of sorts ? With the new jungle hall being planned/built. I think a grand aquarium (burgers ocean style) is something PD could consider, the current aquarium isn't that impressive.

At Laafsekikkers there is some discussion about Blue Oasis basically being a desert oasis expansion of the present day Oasis, which I don't know where it comes from, but a large aquarium would also be something desirable for a place like Pairi Daiza.

The current aquarium most certainly is not that great and not suitable for such a busy park.

I don't know the position of Belgium regarding cetaceans, but they might be one of the few zoos that could handle orcas quite well, although I don't see the transportation of the animals anywhere near easy... Perhaps just some dolphins (preferably not Common Bottlenose) and Belugas

Like in most countries cetaceans are a very controversial subject in Belgium, in fact our capital area already has a purely symbolic ban. Pairi Daiza has already had some trouble with animal rights people over orangutans and polar bears, so I doubt they would touch the cetacean thing with a hundred foot pole.

In my opinion just building something along the lines of Burgers' Ocean, Blijdorp's Oceanium or Nausicaä with large fish collections and perhaps also some herps in a spectacular setting would be a very good option for Pairi Daiza. Of course it being Pairi Daiza they would likely include some accommodation.

Mhm I see, so even "Park Paradise" is not immune to those pesky ticks who call themselves "animalists"; fair then, no cetaceans for the Garden of Worlds...
A major aquarium still sounds really cool notherless, the terrain doesn't seem to lack around them, so they could build it basically anywhere as a major expansion, maybe as big as their lake! That'd be huuge
