Two other projects previously discussed (and also already mentioned on signs in the new entrance area) are "The Steppe" (Eurasian plains, presumably) and "The Land of the Rising Sun" (Japanese world).

Wasn't there also discussion about the fourth world being something along the lines of 'Blue Oasis'? Exactly what that entails is unclear but maybe a new aquarium or something like that.

That was mentioned at the Laafsekikkers recently, yes. However in earlier discussions I found a re-do of the old farm area, the now old former main entrance and nearby areas into a European/Native fauna area mentioned as a possible future world. This project also has to my knowledge not been mentioned on the signs in the new entrance area yet.

Also, I forgot to add to my previous post that one of the few major types of exhibits Pairi Daiza is still missing is a spectacular aquarium - and the current aquarium building really isn't suitable to current visitor numbers as well as having several overstocked or undersized tanks (on a personal note, I would also like to see a seabird exhibit and sea otters added, but those seem a lot more unlikely).

It was however mentioned on the website of one of the construction companies for the Sanctuary that sharks would be included in The Sanctuary. See Pairi Daiza - Sanctuary – BPC Group - in French though.

From the Laafsekikkers I also have this link from one of the designers, mentioning different tropical areas being represented in The Sanctuary. This one is in English.

In the newspaper article from Sudinfo (again in French) linked below (from a Pairi Daiza Facebook fan page) giant otters, manatees, reptiles, jaguars, monkeys, sharks, rare birds and butterflies are mentioned for The Sanctuary.

I'm genuinely excited to see what they do with the Steppe area, and I can't quite imagine what a Japanese area could exhibit. I'm guessing there isn't a lot of information on these fronts, right?
Also, a native fauna area seems like a promising idea too.

For the Japanese world I guess the Japanese macaques and red-crowned cranes they already have will be included, at least. This world will be built on the current monkey islands and the islands that were constructed last year and are currently sometimes used by the water buffaloes (and a lot of wild geese and gulls) next to the Mersus Emergo reptile house ship, so it makes sense to include a primate.

A map from an episode of the French Belgian TV series "Expedition Pairi Daiza" was shown at the Laafsekikkers, this map also seemed to mentioned raccoon dogs and sika deer.

@KevinB there were rumours for Gaurs few years ago. Do you know something about it?

Unfamiliar to me, but I would love that.

All I know about the steppe is that the sign for it (I have an image posted in the gallery) displays an animal that could be a Przewalski's horse, kiang or kulan.

That won't be the only evidence anymore. When I was checking instagram, I saw this mural which can confirm the intention to get wild horses

While I was also snooping in instagram I saw this mural of what looks like a white-fronted capuchin. I know that this definitely wouldn't mean much and might be considered as specuation (so I will apologize before hand), but while I would not expect a white-fronted capuchin, this could imply that we are getting a capuchin, be it one of the EEP species or an unmanaged species still found in Europe.

EDIT: I have also realized that the monkeys of Madidi and the siamangs are also removed from the map.

Since the EEP is phasing out gaur, how reasonable would this be? Don't get me wrong, the more gaur are housed the merrier, but I don't know what to say.

Banteng would also be a nice species too (and even more threatened than gaur), but I don't associate either banteng or gaur with the term steppe. Sure they do occur in grassland habitats, but those are (sub)tropical grasslands, and I associate the term steppe with cold or temperate grasslands personally. Unless they are using the term loosely...

That said, something like an Asian savanna type habitat with a bovine, perhaps some deer and maybe blackbuck would make quite a nice exhibit at Pairi Daiza.

I can quote the discussion:

There is a hell of a lot going on construction wise at Pairi Daiza at the Moment and there have been many great photos from these construction activities posted on the facebook page of laafsekikers (in dutch):

Laafsekikkers

Following an overview on the various construction areas / plans:

Land of cold

The new world 'land of cold' is progressing very well with the amur tigers and reindeers already visible - even if most of the vegetation is still missing.

On laafsekikers is a link to a video (11 minutes long) showing the current construction status of 'land of cold'

Regarding new animlas in 2020 there have been 2 announcements this weekend in the 'brochure écoles 2020' from Pairi Daiza and the facebook page 'zoos de belgique' - they will have musk ox at the location where the reindeers used to live before and they will also have rockhopper penguins together with the king penguins.

New parking and breeding center for endangered birds

Both are projects already communicated and both seem to progress well

New asian world / area / hotel?

Pairi Daize seems to change the area between the huge asian elephant enclosure and the bison enclousre by building various temple buildings resembling the Bagan temples at Myanmar.

bagan-temple-bison-view-jpg.423528

As you can see - the construction starts on the right part of the elephant enclosure and they build similar temple buildings a few hundred meters further down next to the Bison enclosure.

It is so far not clear whey they are doing so and what animals will be on display there.

Speculations are that they might build a new Asia themed hotel there and regarding animals they might either enhance the elephant enclosures (esepcially for the males), separate the elephants from the blackbuck and eld's deers and/or add new animals like Gaur or Indian Rhino...

Southern Cape (Australia)

There is construction going on at the 'Southern Cape' world - all the ferns have been taken out and they seem to re-arrange this area a bit.

Land of Origin (Africa)

There is also construction going on at the 'Land of Origin' - behind the white rhino and african elephant enclosures (behind the wall) there is a new building being built.

Public announcement of mid-term development

On Thursday December 19th there will be a public presentation and hearing for the community of Brugelette about the plans of Pairi Daiza until 2025.

Known so far are the following elemnts:
  • They aim to spent roughly 300m€ over the next 5 years
  • The key new evelopment will be a new Tropical world incl. a huge Tropical dome
  • The hotel capacity shall be expanded to 2000 beds
  • They aim to built a big aquatice center (swimming pools) for their hotel guests so that they can open the park 365 days a year and cover bad weather
  • They want to built a conference center that could host events and would also attract business guests
  • They plan with 3 Million visitors per year and with a maximum daily capacity of 50.000 visitors
It is not clear if and how the potential new worlds 'Dessert' and 'South America' will be included.

The popular message is that EAZA phasing out Gaurs to create space for Banteng and other rare species. I'm just thinking that, if there is a zoo with enough space and courage to assemble a herd of this difficult animals , is PD.

Pairi Daiza doesn't keept black crested mangabey anymore. The 2 females (mother and daughter) went to Arcachon in France. The male was killed in an accident with a gorilla last year, which unfortunately wasn't very unpredicatable given the enclosure lay-out.....
