Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2024

  • Bear cuscus: there was a recent post on Pairi Daiza's Facebook with the remaining individual. It lives in the Oasis greenhouse in the 'Cambron Abbey' area.
  • Brown Dorcospis: an additional individual arrived recently. Kept in a small paddock next to and an indoor space in the koala house.
  • Cape buffalo: in the mixed savanna paddock in The Land of Origins. However they are kept in a separate area with is located quite far in the back, so it might not be the easiest to see them, and you will not see them up close.
  • Corsac fox: Not easy to explain, their exhibit is a little hidden. Easiest way to find them is to take the climbing walkway near the smooth-coated otters or the descending walkway which starts with a Chinese gate and courtyard, past the backside of the Chinese restaurant on the walkway than runs alongside the cathedral aviary. Their exhibit is surrounded by a Chinese-style wall.
  • Lyle's flying fox: In the last section of the Tropicalia greenhouse, which is the greenhouse between the cathedral aviary and the Chinese temple.
  • Echidna: According to Zootierliste kept off-show in the koala house, so highly unlikely to see. Even if they were on-show the chance of seeing them in the koala house (which often isn't open, although you can sometimes look inside from the front side porch) the chance of finding one would be very low.
  • Pallas's squirrel: in the same space as the Lyle's flying foxes.

Again only one bear cuscus? The speed with which Pairi Daiza burns through their rare marsupials without breeding success, be it bear cuscus, wombat, dorcopsis or koala, is staggering...

I only saw one bear cuscus in October of 2023.

The recent Facebook post only mentioned one (the male), not sure what happened with the other. I can't go re-check the Facebook post right now though because I recently deactivated my Facebook for personal mental health reasons.

I don't think Pairi Daiza has ever bred any marsupials besides kangaroos and wallabies.

I only saw one this time last year.

Hi PD experts!

Been here 2 days and failed to find the macaws or caracara. Am I being dumb? Which aviaries are they in please? (Not the hyacinth, found them)

If you have been to the raptor village (area with large raptor aviaries) and there were no caracaras there, they are off-show or out of Pairi Daiza's collection. There are no suitable aviaries elsewhere in the park.

The Spix's and Lear's macaw aviaries are normally found near the farm area, which is located between the Oasis greenhouse and the raptor village. There was ongoing construction in that area a while ago, but to my knowledge those are finished. If they aren't there, they are likely also currently off-show, sadly.

The Spix's and Lear's are on show and like KevinB indicated near the farm area. Walk from the raptor village to the farm, through the gates and turn right. They are in the 2 high aviaries next to the barn.

According the FB page of Pairi Daiza, Pelangi will move to Tierpark Berlin on Tuesday 28 May 2024. They want him to breed with a female.

With only one male and one female Javan leopard left in Europe, I don't see the purpose of breeding this subspecies honestly... no realistic future for this subspecies. And European zoos are normally focusing on Sri Lankan leopards anyway.

That said, hopefully they will repurpose the leopard temple for their clouded leopards after this and give them a better exhibit.

One female left? As far as I know, there are 3 males (Berlin, Fontaine and Pairi Daiza/Berlin) or?

Good luck, as there is only a male in TP Berlin currently.... The press department of Pairi Daiza has done it again claiming theirs is the only male Javan leopard in Europe (when there are 2 others)...

So how big is the population exactly and how many animals are where? The information on ZTL seems incorrect also...

I'm only aware of the following in Europe:

Tierpark Berlin; Arjuna
Pairi Daiza; Pelangi
Doue La Fontaine: Timang

Pairi Daiza mentioned the name "Sinto" as female but I'm only aware of a male once in Tierpark Berlin with that name.

Does anyone know what happened with Shinta (mother of Timang, Pelangi, Arjuna and Sri Kandi) and Sinto? Are they dead?

Ps. Sri Kandi died.

The information on ZTL looks correct listing the 3 males currently in Europe: 1 in Pairi Daiza, Doue and Tierpark Berlin. The final female in Europe died earlier this year in Berlin. All males currently kept were born in TP Berlin in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Without even a single female, I get the move even less... there's really no purpose behind it and isn't really going to help any animal or population, unless perhaps the exhibit at Berlin is much better than the one at Pairi Daiza.

Having a better accommodation than PD is no hard feat :p. TP Berlin is probably still the owner of these animals and is supposedly interested in importing new animals from Java. I am not familiar with the current lay-out, but apparently they want 2 leopards on show...

I've heard rumours TPB are going to import further Javan Leopards but who knows if anything will come of it.
