Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2024

According to the English homepage of Chinese News Services (ECNS) an agreement has been signed between China and Pairi Daiza to get 3 golden snub-nosed monkeys foe 10 years (similar to the agreement with Beauval some weeks ago)...

Chinese golden snub-nosed monkeys to further conservation research in Belgium

It's like an 'arms race' between Beauval and Pairi Daiza to see which zoo can top the other. These two zoos have built more new exhibits than perhaps any other places in Europe during the last 15 years. If one gets something new and shiny then the other needs to do the same. ;)

I would say Beauval easily wins that race in terms of innovative and world class exhibits...

I’m with Lintworm. I enjoyed my Beauval visit but “world class exhibits”, mwah. They have a beautiful african aviary that coincidentally contains a decent hippo exhibit. The manatee pool is impressive but overstocked. The only other real highlight is the birdshow, but that’s hardly an exhibit as such. It also has a few bad ones as well.

Pairi Daiza has it’s quirky crypt and quite a few very decent exhibits, give me Pairi Daiza any day of the week.

I don’t think Ouwehands will follow soon, I don’t think it’s owner is as much a species hunter as the other two. And I truly dislike the whole leasing system anyways, so I also hope not.

I don’t even think the crypt was good. I left the building around two minutes after standing near the door because I felt like one of the bats almost crashed into me. I did even see anything leading up to the naked mole-rats, mouse lemurs, and amphibians so I missed those exhibits. I don’t know if they still have the dubious “oddity” props which are distasteful, regardless of whether they are real or not.

Great deal (for PR only...). Offspring will be transferred when they reach the age of 5 years. As if in this species both sexes leave their natal group when reaching a certain age! Can anyone explain them the importance of (trying) to follow natural social behaviour?

One could say the same about all the Panda loans too. Always in pairs though it is known that in the wild they lek with several males vying to mate a female. But in captivity this is never emulated in the loans to western zoos, ,only replaced with the many, often failed attempts with AI etc which must also be stressful for the animals.

At least they dare to be different (amongst the current fashionable onslaught vis a vis PR China zoos and conservation action in-country both in situ and in the local PR China zoos!

A new road is likely going to be constructed to make the villages surrounding Pairi Daiza free of traffic going to/leaving the park. A permit could already be given in 2025, and the road could be finished as early as 2026. The plan also includes biking lanes going to the park, better bus and train connections etc.

Let's hope it actually happens this time. There have been plans for a new road before, but they didn't happen partially because of protest from local farmers over the road taking up some agricultural land.

Conservation action in China? You would still believe in that even after the New York Times’s report on how panda loans are spent?

For short: Yes, I do and I am not merely talking just panda loans. I mean the wider and overall picture!

And with that observation, I would like to end this tit for tat discourse forthwith.

I was always amazed by the attendance at P-D given the access roads and tiny rural villages, and that was 15 years ago!
