After a group of Pallas squirrels escaped from an animal-dealer in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands, a healty population lived near the town of Weert. Because this species is known to be an invasive species with large populations in Japan, Argentina and South France, it was dicided to try to catch all Dutch animals and sofar almost 250 squirrels have been caught. The animals are send to a center in Belgium and made infirtile. Then they are given to zoos, animalparks and other animal-keeping insitutions for educational purposes.
I've seen a small group of these atractive animals at Taman Indonesia in Kallenkote and even if they escape, now are no danger anymore for the Dutch Red squirrels.
