ok so i changed my mind on my husbandry manual for the 3rd and final time- im a bird nut so im going to do the PALM COCKATOO.

any info or cool photos anyone knows anything about? or if you have one can i please steal some photos of aviaries and or enrichment toys etc? i know adelaide zoo has them, but curious about other displays too.

thanx again!!!! LK:p

I'm afraid Adelaide is the only collection that has palm cockatoos in Australia - unless they're in some small non-ZAA wildlife park.

They're also not kept in aviculture in Australia to my knowledge. There may be a tiny handful kept legally, and probably a few illegally. But good luck getting information on them.

Palm cockatoos really aren't a wise choice for an assignment.

There are 2 legal privatly held ones that I know of, 1 by the McKechnie Family (Gorge) and 1 privatley in QLD

for more info try getting ur hands on a book called aviculture in australia. the husbandry section on palm cockies is quite good and it also details the status of the birds in australia and breeding records up until the time the book was published

There are some scattered around a few Zoos in Europe and North America too- more than the captive total in Australia? You could look on ISIS and contact some of them too maybe if you are staying with this species.

It will be a very difficult manual to write, but might be worth it. I'm sure your aware but husbandry manuals are a massive effort

yeh no matter what the species husbandry manuals are a big effort - unfortunatly the palm cockatoo was the only parrot i could get my teacher to agree on. im enjoying the challenge

Well Gorge WP most definately did not have a Palm cockatoo when I was working there a few weeks ago. That would be the only Australian cockatoo species they don't have at the park.

I will try and find out. It may have been one that was being temporarily held for Adelaide zoo( Gorge does quite a bit of this, I understand) It is not there any more though. What a shame the Palm cockatoo is not held by private aviculturists in this country. With the success that has been achieved with other black cockatoos in Australia, I'm sure that some really valuable work could be done. Overseas, the species is bred quite frequently, so I don't see why our people could not achieve similar success. Politics I guess! Just out of interest, does anyone know what the origin of Australia's captive Palm cockatoos is? I beleive that those currently held actually originate from either New Guinea or SE Asia. :)

Adelaide Hen is a NG Bird, Adelaide Cock is an Aussie Bird, the Palm at Gorge (which did not come from a ZAA Zoo) looked to me like an Aussie Palm, but have heard rumours is was an NG Bird. It may of just dissappeared into the aviaries with EBAG and other schemes.
