Edinburgh Zoo Pandamonium to hit Edinburgh! #1

Right, then I know exactly what one it is then. I dont go down that section very often I must admit but I have stayed and watched the Guinea Baboon's when I do.

I can see how it makes sence with the two habitat enclosures and the indoor sections.
It is quite an old building though, so I wonder what they plan to do with it.

Oh meant to reply about the Guinea Baboons having a second location at the Zoo, in the land to the left side of the Lion habitat before going up the very steep hill.

So I think they are okay to keep the colony :)

Ahh cool, hopefully I will still get to see them when I come up to see the pandas :D

Is that not the gelada enclosure, the grassy paddock on the slope?

Ahhh, yes it is the Gelada. I was looking at my pictures and thought they looked the same, so put 2+2 together and got the wrong number!

And i've had someone mention to me the Guinea are staying as visitors from Paris while they do their major referb of the zoo.

The Guinea Baboon troop came from Paris Zoo. It's currently closed for rebuilding but when it re-opens in the next couple of years (2012?) will the Baboons return to France or are they on permanent loan to Edinburgh?

As was mentioned earlier in the thread I know that Colchester Zoo publically expressed their interest in gaining pandas about 6/7 years ago, and the leader of the local council discussed the matter on a visit to China. I don't know how far talks got though. I also remember reading that a lack of high power political support for the zoo was a problem with moving talks foward.

However I do know that in 2008 Colchester Zoo donated money after the earthquakes in China and zoo director Anthony Tropeano visited a panda breeding centre: BBC NEWS | UK | England | Essex | Zoo helps quake-hit giant pandas

As far as i can remember.. the Guinea Baboon troop were only here till their enclosure was refurbished.. They have been fun to watch but atleast they have done some of the job for the zoo staff as they seem to strip their enclosure of all enrichments regularly..lol

this is the building

do the baboons currently have access to the enclosure that runs up the left hand side of the building aswell? i dont remember that part at all! I do remember seeing the baboons in the lower exhibit though!

I presume the lay out will remain the same: two enclosures but the fronts will be refurbished perhaps like they have done with the sun bears. take away the straight edge of the moat, Bamboo railings etc.

They have a lot of work to do!!

Yup they do, they have full access to everything, howdy gate left open as well between the two areas.

It's funny but now I know exactly where we are on about I can remember it quite well now :)

Not sure how far I'd bother to go to see one, and after seeing Chi Chi & An An I was surprised to discover they DO move, but I hope it helps Edinburgh's problems.

I've been lucky in that I have visited locations for other reasons that just so happened to have Panda's in the local zoo's.
Brother lives in Berlin so it is quite easy and cheap trip to visit him and then stop off and visit Bao and Knut for a day ;)

Orangeperson -- Chi Chi could be pretty lively, lively enough to give a young keeper a serious mauling.

She wasn't doing much the day I saw Chi Chi, but she did die the next day!

The hut in the bottom left corner of that picture is the Volunteers Hut! :)

And have you ever thought about how close you came to not seeing a panda for many more years!? :D (not to mention being grateful for that the bear decided not to die until this (presumably young at the time) Simon McGlary from Edinburgh would have the honour of seeing her! :p)

What sort of jump did visitor numbers take when the Koala arrived? I think that panda will be a much bigger draw but realistically will they draw millions more than the koala?

I dont understand why people on here are being negative about the arrival of one of the most iconic animals in the world to a zoo in the UK, especially on a forum of zoo enthusiasts!

I personally think its fantastic, they are a very rare animal that Edinburghs laboratories are going to work with to help insitu conservation, they need all the captive breeding opportunities they can get and if it encourages more people to visit zoos and learn about conservation then really and truly does it matter if it didnt move on the day you were at the zoo! Seriously guys, almost every zoo Ive ever visited display big cats, and they dont do much!

One of the rarest large mammals in the world coming to a zoo in the UK for the first time in 17 years and you are worried about whether or not it will move, you remind of the kids I see banging on the glass or throwing something in the enclosures to make the occupants move!

Well look how excited enthusiasts get at things like cloudrunners yet from what I've heard and seen they're generally invisible or inactive! :p
