Dierenpark Wissel (Closed) Pangea Park

Pangea Parc is the new name at a new location for Wissel Zoo. The zoo has not yet relocated to the larger site, but will in the very near future. Must check when the final planning permission was given and what the date for first building activity will be.

The main reason for moving house has been the unavailability of extra green belt land at the old site to expand the collection. Zodiac Zoos had thus decided to look for new options elsewhere and came up with the Pangea site. The big charm of this and other Zodiac Zoos has been that they champion the "small and little" that is often forgotten in the larger zoos for fear that without giraffes, rhinos, eles, lions, tigers and great apes zoos cannot bring in the crowds. I find that fear/policy a little outdated ...

Pangea Parc is one small step closer. Both Zodiac and the local coucil are drawing up a declaration of intention.

Pangea Parc has it's own website now. Basicly they already have designed the zoo. At least the zones. Their species wishlist (they list certain animals that live in zones they plan to built)is very interesting some highlights:

Honey Badger (Ratel)
Fossa
Jaguarundi
Koala's
Platypus
Aardvarks
Gerenuks

some highlights:Platypus

That is going to be very difficult but mostly impossible to get. In the current state, Australia won't ever send away platypus to even New Zealand (live speciemens I mean, not sure about stuffed ones) than overseas. Therefore, it might take more than a decade or so for Europe and the US zoos to see them make their way into their collections.

It is tho a great wishlist. You would be lucky to see more Tassie Devils sent overseas at this rate, but maybe if any Tasmanian girls marry European royalty it could be possible ;).

Our prince has married an argentinian, but i'm yet to see any giant armadillo's coming our way :(

Pangea Parc is still in the works, allthough that wishlist might remain just as it's called. Then again, Zodiac has surprised me in the past with many weird and exotic newcomers to Dutch Zoo's, so I wouldn't put some of them past them.

But I estimate it will take at least a couple of more years before Pangea will become reality (if ever...)

Since there is a huge difference in attendance between the zoos with the large animals and the zodiacs, I would say it's far from being outdated. But I appreciate the zodiacs for the same reason, btw.

Are these plans on ice now? I have tried to find the Pangea Park website, but it appears to be dead. I'm guessing that this has gone the way of so many planned new zoos. Can any Dutch members confirm? Thanks!

Welkom bij Pangea Parc! is still in the air. The last news item is from 2010. It says it's going slowly but the plans are still in place.

As far as I know, Zodiac owns the site Wissel is on at the moment. It's situated around a small stream and therefore there is no building allowed on the site. The plans where for the city council to buy the land from Zodiac, issue building permits and sell the land with the permits. With the current financial climate, these plans are now on hold. There where also protests from the neighbours surrounding Wissel as wel as conservationists who want to keep the stream healthy and free of surrounding buildings.

Then on the new site there needed to be a environment-effect rapport (which has now been made by Zodiac) and the building permits for the site needed to be arranged. As it is in Holland, everyone is allowed to protest against this, so this is not fully arranged yet.

Another issue was that the province needed to build a road along the new site. As far as I know, the building of this road was planned anyways and is now nearing completion which takes that objection out of the way (but only recently).

As far as I know, the plans are still in place. But if it will ever happen, I don't know...
