Papuan forests the size of Seoul burned

Forest burning allegedly carried out by a foreign company in Papua to build a palm oil plantations. Responding to this event, the Indonesian twitter users used the hashtag #SavePapuaForest and #SaveHutanIndonesia as a form of wrath that their country's rainforest is being destroyed by a foreigner. The hashtags #SavePapuaForest and #SaveHutanIndonesia have entered the Indonesian trending topic since last Friday.

It was reported that a investigation by Greenpeace with Forensic Architecture found allegations that a foreign company had deliberately burned a forests in Papua to build a palm oil plantations. However, the company denied the allegation. The company claims that the information that says their company is responsible for the burning of the Papuan forests is not true.

A South Korean company was accused as the suspect behind this event, but it's not 100% confirmed. So I didn't accuse them right away.

There's no way a Seoul-sized fire would just be there like that.

Either way, it's really sad to see the forest burned up like that.

Dear God
This would spell doom for rare animals there like Dingiso, White-banded dorcopsis and Crocodylus halli. I hope truth prevails someday and the companies behind the forest fires will be held accountable. But I kinda doubt since the justice system in Indonesia is hella broken and corrupted, and mostly benefits money-hungry capitalists and rich people than poor people, indigenous people and the nature.

But if there's God, there's a way...

Speaking about the broken justice system in Indonesia, there was a case where an old poor woman was fined and jailed for "stealing" a log from a teak plantation, and she was freed after netizens' outcry, but a Korean capitalist burning down an entire forest for a palm oil plantation isn't fined at all.

Wanna know why? They have the money to bribe the ministry of forestry and the judges.

Man, do I hate the justice system of this country. Don't get me wrong, I love my home country as a whole, but the system is pretty much f***ed up. And when you add politics and religion to the mix you get yourself a s***storm in here.

If we want to protect rainforests and other natural habitats, we have to ensure that the local people are better off financially than they would be by allowing the habitats to be destroyed. A few hours ago, I heard a radio programme about indigenous Amazon people not receiving protection against the coronavirus. Some people haven't got decades to wait. There are nations where the gulf between the rich and the poor is immense and this is grossly unfair. We need to end corruption and help people preserve natural habitats.

Korindo, a South Korean company, was found guilty after a investigation revealed that they 'deliberately' burned a forest in West Papua to build a palm oil plantations. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) temporarily revoked the trademark license of the palm oil company. An investigation carried out by Forensic Architecture and Greenpeace found evidence that Korindo had burned land to build its palm plantations during the 2011-2016 period. The FSC said they will not expel Korindo and would work with them, which is committed to "improvement, which is more important than punishment".
