Parrots in North America

Yes, the title is accurate, rounding out the last nonpasserine group without a list, parrots is here. And my word it was hard to sort out! So many alternate names! As it currently stands, the list contains 111 species plus a generic (unspecified Rainbow Lorikeet.) Cutoff date is 2018 due to longevity of the group.

Important Taxonomy Notes:

I have followed Birds of the World's taxonomy, resulting in the following, all specified where applicable;

Timneh Parrot is lumped with Gray Parrot

Stella's Lorikeet is lumped with Papuan Lorikeet

Rosenberg's/Biak Lorikeet is lumped with Coconut Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeet is split into six species, listed individually - Coconut, Swainson's, Red-collared, Marigold, Leaf, and Sunset

Yellow-headed Amazon is split from Yellow-crowned Amazon

Notes on facilities:

Emphasis was placed on rarer species, many common species are likely low but I did not spend as much time looking for Budgies and Cockatiels for example.

Ambassador birds are marked where known for sure, it is not complete.

Parrot Mountain is added, but species were difficult to confirm and several rare species are marked as questionable.

I don't want pet stores with resident birds unless they are decidedly rare per the list; pet stores are otherwise not within the scope of the thread.

Species currently unlisted that are likely around:

Blue-eyed Cockatoo
Red-vented/Philippine Cockatoo
Chattering Lory
Iris Lorikeet
Black-cheeked Lovebird
- 2020 Parrot Tag says 29, where are they? I see SDZSP and Cleveland as at least historical holders but cannot find recent confirmations for anywhere.
White-winged/Canary-winged Parakeet
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet
Northern/Southern Festive Amazons
Northern/Southern Mealy Amazons
Parrotlets
- Parrot Mountain supposedly has, but species unclear
Nanday Parakeet/Conure
Mitred Parakeet/Conure
Red-masked Parakeet/Conure

P.S. to @Coelacanth18, sorry for giving all your competitors a cheat sheet for "Polly Wants 20"! :p

P.S. to @Coelacanth18, sorry for giving all your competitors a cheat sheet for "Polly Wants 20"! :p
Saw Chattering lory a few years ago in Toledo. Does Elmwood Park still have Canary-winged conure. Saw Nanday conure at Feathered Friends Forever in Georgia and Red-masked conure at Waccatee Zoo in South Carolina. Living Coast Discovery Center has Mitered conure on their website.

P.S. to @Coelacanth18, sorry for giving all your competitors a cheat sheet for "Polly Wants 20"! :p

A cheat sheet for my challenge's participants? I won't stand for it!

Oh wait, I'm a participant in my challenge. In that case, full steam ahead.

Also major props for actually doing cockatiel and budgie lists :p can't wait to see what those numbers work their way up to. I feel like some of the passerine groups would have been less painful!

When I wen to Natural Encounters Inc. I remember seeing Kea, Palm Cockatoo, Red-tailed black Cockatoo, Blue-throated Macaw, Blue & Yellow Macaw, Hyacinth Macaw, Scarlet Macaw, Green, winged Macaw, and Millitary Macaw. I am sure that there are a few species that I missed on the list I gave bc NEI has a lot of parrots.

Santa Fe College also has Cuban Amazons. They are still listed on their website so it's fair to believe that they are still there.

I'ts hard to know where to begin with updating this list. I know I've seen a lot of these species at facilities not listed but there's just so much here it's overwhelming. For now:

Timbavati keeps Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Sun Conure.

Racine keeps Budgerigar and Yellow-crowned Amazon.

Indianapolis keeps Red Lory.

Shedd keeps Hawk-headed Parrot.

Animal Gardens Petting Zoo keeps Blue-and-yellow Macaw and Green-winged Macaw.

I see you have Jo-Don Farms listed for a few species. That facility has closed so all of its listings can be removed.

A question: which smallish parakeets/lorikeets are both of conservation concern and relatively friendly towards people?

Lots of zoos keep budgerigars, cockatiels and rainbow lorikeets as contact / petting zoo animals. They could be potentially replaced by species with more value as insurance population or conservation storytelling.

I believe sun parakeets/conures (IUCN status EN) could be a animals that is safe to interact with. The only problem is that most established feeding aviaries are a part of an Australia themed exhibit, which sun conure wouldn’t fit.

Sedgwick County Zoo does not hold Pesquet's Parrot any longer. They do however have Blue-headed Parrot, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, and Golden Parakeet.
