Past and present of Prague Zoo

PANGOLINS:

PAST:

Long-tailed pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla)
This individual imported from the Belgisch Congo in 1953 didn't last long, only one day.

Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata)
This individual lived in Prague circa 1969.

Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica)
In the same year, there were four individuals imported the longest living individual lived fifteen days.

PRESENT:

Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla)
There were three imports in the 1950s and one in the 1980s but all of the animals died in a matter of days, except one of them one pangolin survived more than one year. The most recent attempt at keeping was made in 2022 with a pair from Taipei. The pair Guo Bao and Run Hou Tang bred and in 2023, Šiška (Pine cone in English) was born. It was the first time a pangolin was born and successfully raised in Europe.

PAST:

Indian musk shrew (Suncus murinus)
It is not known for how long this species was kept. All that we know is that the keeping ended in 2003.

Long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus)
This species was kept several times between the 1960s and 2013, but breeding was unsuccessful.

Northern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus)
It is unclear how long this species was kept, but we do know that the keeping ended in 2009.

West European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
This species was probably kept from the early 2000s to 2016.

Prague has been keeping and breeding this species since 2017.

Four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
This species was first kept from 2012 to 2020, with the most recent attempt in 2023.

PAST:

Burchell's zebra (Equus quagga burchellii)
This species was kept from 1966, it is unknown how long this species lasted in Prague.

Chapman's zebra (Equus quagga chapmani)
It is not known for how long and when this species was kept.

Grant`s zebra (Equus quagga boehmi)
The first attempt at keeping this species was made in 1949 and was very successful because from 1949 to 1970 they raised fifteen colts. The second attempt was made in 2004 but the animals only bred twice and the animals probably died or were moved away in 2019.

Hartmann's mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae)
The first attempt at keeping this species was made in 1958 but the animals probably didn't breed and the keeping ended in 1971. The second attempt was probably made in the 1990s and the animals lived until 2000.

Maneless zebra (Equus quagga borensis)
This species was kept from 2018 to 2023.

Kulan (Equus hemionius kulan)
This species was kept from 1951 to 2010. In 2010 the last animals were moved to Plzen.

Somali wild ass (Equus africanus somaliensis)
This species was kept in the 1990s

Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
This species was kept from 1933 to 1940. It was represented by one male named Max from Circus Kludsky.

Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli)
This species was kept from 1954 to 1972. It was represented by two individuals Max II. and Isis.

Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum)
This species was imported from the wild in 1971. The two individuals (Female and male) were moved to Opole after the 2002 floods.

PRESENT:

Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi)
The first attempt was made in 1953 but the animals did not breed and died in 1961. The second and the most recent attempt was made in 1972. The fist successful breeding happened in 1984.

Eastern kiang (Equus kiang holdereri)
Initially attempted in the 60s and 70s, the current line of kiangs was first kept in Prague in 1991.

Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii)
This species has been kept since 1932 and Prague Zoo is one of the most successful breeders in the world. They also reintroduce these wild horses back into the grasslands of Mongolia.

This species was first kept from 1967 to 1996, with the most recent attempt in 2010, and successful breeding in 2015.

Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus)
This species was housed in the nocturnal section of the Indonesian jungle from the early 2000s until 2021.

Gambian epauletted bat (Epomophorus gambianus)
It is unclear when the keeping of this species began being kept, but it was discontinued in 2008.

Island flying fox (Pteropus hypomelanus)
It is unclear when the keeping of this species began being kept, but it was discontinued in 2006/2007

Large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus)
This species was kept at some point between 1931 and 2001.

PRESENT:

Straw-colored fruit bat (Eidolon helvum)
This species is kept from 2022. They are housed in the Dja reserve.

This species is kept from 2007. In the summer they are housed behind the scenes, but in the winter they are housed in the Giant tortoise house.

CIVETS AND MONGOOSES:

PAST:

Binturong (Arctictis binturong)
The small mammals house kept binturongs from 1959 until 1994, with some breaks in between. After a pause, the zoo resumed keeping this species in 2005 with a female from Hanoi. In 2006, a pair was introduced, and in 2007, another female joined them. In 2013, the animals were relocated to another zoo. They were housed in the Indonesian jungle.

It is not known when the keeping of this species started but it's known that it ended in 2009. This species was housed in the nocturnal section of the Indonesian jungle.

Its not about the attention span, i am just not satisfied with this thread, there are many inaccuracies. I am the kind of person who scraps the entire project just because of some small mistake. I just hope that the next thread will be more accurate as I will try to learn from my mistakes and about things that I dont know, contact zoochaters that may or may not help me out I also acquired a new source of information. Sorry about the grammar but im typing this on mobile. Thank you for reading this :)
