Paultons Park Paultons Park

Its a nice collection, especially the birds. I have never noted there being many hornbills, but I know there is a a few species there. Sadly the future plan is to remove the animals gradually, as they are losing the park profit, I heard this from a member of staff just to clarify. The park is also home to meerkats, wallabys and some tortoises. The penguins and African aviary are also worth walking down to. Sadly they seem to keep the animal collections away from anything else in the park. If your into birds its worth visiting but beware the price is rather expensive.

@ JamesB I`m not sure when you heard that they are planning on down sizing the collection, but when I was with the senior Bird Keeper in March this year certainly didn`t get the impression of a place down sizing its collections with all the building work and plans to improve the collection.

As for Hornbills they have the following species with in the collection Black-casqued Wattled Hornbill,Southern Ground Hornbill,Von ders Decken Hornbill and Red-billed Hornbill.Until recently they had Rhinoceros Hornbill but they sent it the last one they had to Chester to form a pair with the female hatched at Chester,in the past they have held up to 9 species of Hornbills.

Oh, well fair enough. I was told by a friend (this year) who's been working at the park for several years that they were definitely planning not to bring in any new animals and eventually size down the collection and focus on adding family attractions. I'm not sure what else to say, this is where two statements collide! I would believe the senior keeper over my informant if am honest, only because the senior keeper is a high position and he obviously knows what he is talking about.

I love Paultons. A great place for everyone. The animals are great and my kids love the new Peppa Pig World.

I was just looking at Hants Top Days Out Instagram story and it showed a picture of a sign showing a new exhibit opening Spring 2018 called 'Little Africa'.
The sign read "Journey into the heart of Africa, Little Africa will bring you face to face with Fennec Foxes, African Porcupine, Meerkats, Monitor Lizard, Whip Scorpions and much more. Venture out on to the balcony to look out over a mini-savannah to see a magnificent free-flying with an impressive selection of African birds including Trumpeter Hornbill, Egyptian Vultures and Madagascan Teals."

This was being planned and discussed by the animal team back in 2015, it will basically redesign the current area of African aviary and the meerkat enclosure. Though the adjacent strip of grass, which was formerly a deer paddock many years ago, will be used as a further extension to the nearby Peppa Pig themed facility, which is a shame, that it could not be incorporated into the new animal area. The area is currently fenced off to visitors to allow work to take place on this.

Incidentally, as Zoogiraffe said, there is no plan to reduce the animal side of things at Paultons, but what they ARE doing instead is to revamp nearly all of the current animal facilities over a ten year period, some will be replaced with something else, and not necessarily just birds, some will be mammals etc.. but most will be themed to some degree.

A new animal attraction called 'Little Africa' will be opening at February half-term.

'Opening for February Half Term is Little Africa. See the Park’s own little corner of Africa and discover the amazing animals and birds of the savanna. From Meerkats, to Porcupines, Lizards to Mongoose there are animals of all shapes and size to delight and entertain. Visit the nocturnal house to see the Fennec Foxes, Giant Pouched Rats and Scorpions before venturing back in to the picturesque free flying aviary to meet Trumpeter Hornbills, Black-Crowned Night Herons and many, many more fascinating species.'

Little Africa has been renamed to Wild Lands. Little Africa was a better name than the new one in my opinion and don’t know why they have changed it.

Paultons Park is one of 3 ZTL collections with an indigo bunting, one of 2 with a Cape house snake and a Lichtenstein's short-fingered gecko and the only one with a prickly gecko

All those reptiles are very very common in private collections.

Visited Paulton's Park on Wednesday, here are a few things I noted:

- Duprasi are no longer on display in Beastie Burrow. Short-fingered are now in their place.

- The Sun conure and kookaburra aviaries have been Demolished to make way for a new zoo section opening next year.

- Red-billed Quela can now be seen In the tortoise hut.

- Harvest mice and a sugar glider are now visible in wild lands.

- A new species will be coming to Wild Lands soon.

- White throated monitor exhibit still empty, I visited exactly 1 year 1 day ago, it was in the same state.

Thanks Springbok. Hopefully some interesting stuff. I've not been to Paultons Park since they added Little Africa but things like Sugar Gliders are cool! Glad you enjoyed your day.

Any idea what animals will be in the new zoo section?
I visited Paultons today and saw this sign on the construction fence surrounding the new zoo area:

A new animal has arrived in the old Savannah monitor enclosure , looks to be a small mongoose ( Most likely cusimanse by the looks of the photo.)

Please see The parks X page for details.
