On October 19, PCBA sent two male Javan warty pigs (Sus verrucosus) to the Baluran National Park, East Java. This is the first reintroduction program to ever carry out for this endangered species. Currently, the pigs are in the pre-release facility. The pigs will be released into the wild in the near future.

Baluran is also the site of an ambitious banteng breeding program ex situ. Of course there is a significant banteng population in the national park.

Out of curiosity: had the Jawan warty pig previously gone extinct at Baluran?

There are probably a few Javan warty pigs left at Baluran.

I really would be interested to know: Did authorities ever do a status survey on the Jawan warty pigs at Baluran NP?

It might then also be interesting to get some more founders for the small founder base of the captive-breeding program. Last year 2 new very young Jawan warty pigs were confiscated from individuals caught in the wild. These have been sent I believe to Cikananga (but I may be wrong there).

P.S.: Banteng wise, Baluran NP breeding center has exchanged bulls with Taman Safari. This also happened sometime last year as part of the Indonesian Species Program.

On January 20th 2023, the first group of Javan warty pigs were reintroduced to Baluran National Park. They are the first warty pigs in the park since their extinction in the 1980s.

The breeding bomas contained 27 pigs sourced from breeding centres in Java (Cikananga Conservation Breeding Center, Taman Safari Bogor and Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark), plus another 12 piglets that were confiscated following the illegal poaching of their mothers.
