Thanks!

Was it a northern or southern hornbill?

Your list is great, but people like it when the scientific names are included especially for reptiles, amphibians, and other ectotherms.

Thanks for your advise!

It was labeled as "African Ground Hornbill", but it's the Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri).

Yes, that sounds true that I need scientific names! I understand that there are diferent ways of calling one species. I'll add on!

Thank you for taking the time to create this comprehensive list, Toki ! There are great places in Malaysia , that definitely deserve more attention on ZooChat :)

I contacted the Bird Park last year and they said the Helmeted Hornbills died "due to unavoidable reasons."
Thanks for the information.
That's sad news, since I dont know any other zoos in Malaysia with Helmeted Hornbills.

Do you know which subspecies of Rhinoceros Hornbill they have on display?

Thanks for your question.
To be honest, I didn't even think about subspecies of Rhinoceros Hornbills until you asked me!

Well, I really don't know the differences between the subspecies, and he sign does not mention anything. Can you recognize the subspecies from this photo?

Thanks for giving me an to think about this! 45B65A94-8857-4938-BE79-9937B8FA2379.jpeg rhinoceroshornbill.jpeg

Not an expert but looks like the Malayan subspecies (B.r.rhinoceros). The Bornean subspecies (B.r.borneoensis) has a really tightly rolled tip of the casque. Could also be a Javan subspecies (B.r.silvestris) but I'm not really sure how a Javan Rhinoceros Hornbill would end up in a Malaysian collection. Do you know the origin of this hornbill? If she is wild caught then she'll most likely be B.r.rhinoceros.

I heard that the rhinoceros hornbills are born here and rescued, so it looks like the Malayan subspecies.

Thank you @Toki for creating this valuable resource. Both @twilighter and I enjoyed touring the Penang Bird Park with you, even though it’s an establishment that has seen better days. Fingers crossed that a surprise buyer pops up to take it over. That’s a long shot, but it would be wonderful to see this place revitalized in the future.

It was my pleasure to visit the park with you two!
I'd keep on visiting this park, and try to keep track of improvements!

thanks for sharing. I sent them the mail Feb this year before I go to Penang, but no response, then I tried to watch the latest video from YT, didn't see anyone captured this bird, so later I decided not to visit. Now got the confirmation, it is sad.
