Melbourne Aquarium penguins on show (plus protests)

I can't remember the last time I went to the aquarium, but I do know that they try to advertise it a little over the top. e.g shark fest, creppy crawlers.
well that's standard for zoos and aquariums because they need to pull in the punters. The whole Creepy Cave area I thought was good: coconut crabs, Christmas Island crabs, all sorts of other inverts and native fish etc. Some odd displays for them though (redbacks in a miniature city for example -- see photos in the gallery)

Guys, guys, cut the facility a break.
They did not spend $28million to build a tank full of snow. They substantially expanded the aquarium - as near as I can gather - and the penguins are the stars of this expansion. The funds were spent to add to the revenue generating capacity of the aquarium as well as display penguins. It is all part of a much bigger redevelopment of the area which in total may well attract more visitors. And besides, King penguins are VERY impressive and gentoos are fun...too

The first post in this thread contained two articles refering to a $28 million exhibit for penguins. My subsequent comments were based on the fact that I think $28mill is a ridiculous amount to have been spent. Obviously, the newspapers simplified things somewhat and, despite the fact I often tell people not to believe everything they read in the news, I believed what I read.

So I appreciate you clarifying the situation. If the $28 million was spent on renovations and expansions, and the exhibit was a part of that, then that's far more acceptable to me.

But I disagree King Penguins are "VERY impressive" - certainly, they're a good lookinhg animal, but I woudn't call them very impressive.

Bu an Emperor Penguin, now that's a different story.........

:)
