Personal Rules you Live by

Do you guys have any rules you made for yourselves that you live by? Here are mine.

1. When it comes to American politics, watch but don't get involved or pick a party. Getting involved will make you obnoxious and stressed out all the time and picking a party means you're less likely to criticize a member of your chosen party.

2. When it comes to wildlife populations, I don't believe anything the Indonesian government tells me.

3. It may not be the best source, but Wikipedia will always be a more reliable source of information than Tiktok.

4. Never roll over when told, think and make your own opinions.

5. Animal rights activists should never be taken seriously.

The 'rule for life' I like, and which is particularly important online, is:

Don't yuck someone's yum.

Basically, if someone likes something and it's not doing any harm, let them have their joy. No need to tell them all the reasons you don't like it if you're not asked.

what a bloody weird phrase but I agree with its meanings.

It's a bit of 'hakuna matata' I guess. Something I have been innocently accused of in recent times.

Do not read any comment sections, whether on YouTube, on social media or on news websites, and stay off Twitter or X in general - there is very little of worth to be found there and way too much to get upset over.

Have ideas!!!

Many Late Millennials and Gen Z members will be familiar with this exchange in SpongeBob SquarePants, where in discussion over what to do that day, “I don’t know, what do you wanna do today?” is repeated on a seemingly continuous loop (it peters out around the 11th second).

It’s satire, emphasised by their demeanour, but highlights the laziness of the question and evokes frustration in the viewer (both young and old).

This is because we’ve all met people in life who ask if you wanna hang out, but then respond with, “I don’t mind, what do you wanna do?” when asked what they have in mind. These people aren’t accomodating, they’re just lazy.

It’s better to have ideas:

Instead of suggesting meeting for lunch, suggest a cafe/restaurant and a day/time.

Instead of suggesting a day out, suggest a location and an activity.

If you’ve proposed something unsuitable or highly undesirable, the other person/persons will surely let you know and you can by all means compromise. To use a friend group context as an example, the ideal would be everyone taking turns to seize the initiative and suggest ideas.
