Perth zoo before the 2000's

have you been to perth zoo before?
and if so when did you last go

what colour mutations have animals had at perth zoo in the past?

Visited Perth Zoo approximately 30 times between late 1991 and last visited in January 2006 so long long time sadly.

I don't really know about many colour-morph variations of animals at the zoo historically besides the female black Leopard, except that Chester the male white Tiger stayed temporarily at the zoo from December 1995 to February 1996.

a change they made recently was putting a bamboo pattern over the Sumatran tiger enclosure glass so that nobody would bother it. I think it was a good thing because one time I went I saw a family banging on the glass wherever the tiger went until it lost it and started clawing at the glass. To me it looked like it was developing Zoochosis

so when you were there, was it still really bad for the animals or had it already changed

Generally speaking it was looking really really great the zoo when first started visiting, the African Savannah especially stood out amongst the exhibits and was brand new when first started visiting the zoo (and remember thinking the former Otter pool was a good exhibit too back then, and the Gibbon and Lemur islands). All the upgrading work throughout the 1980s (and a few things in the '70s) had already taken place so missed the archaic dated old enclosures like Tricia the Elephant's former tiny enclosure, the Otter moat and castle (maybe not the worst in those days, but a famous former exhibit) and the notorious Bear grottos etc.

The exception to everything looking really modern, well planted etc for the inhabitansts, was a row of cages next to eachother each about 30m wide one called 'Macaque Row' which had about three 50 sq m enclosures that housed Hamadryas Baboons, Tonkean Macaques and Sulawesi Crested Macaques (and Mandrills too before) that used to be the Big Cat enclosures and even had Striped Hyena in one of them at one point), next was 'Gibbon Row' which was about 6 or 7 enclosures ranging from about 32 sq m to 64 sq m that held most of the zoo's Gibbon species at the time: Silvery, White-Cheeked, White-Handed (Lar) and Hoolocks (some White-Handed Gibbons also lived on one of the lake islands so were the more fortunate of the Gibbons in that era aswell as the Siamang pair Ringo & Starr who lived in the older of the Gibbon aviaries still in use until late 1995 (can see those old rows on the 1993 aerial, the 'Gibbon Row' used to be the Orangutan and Chimpanzee row until 1981, the old Dome cage was attached to end of it, used to be Atjeh the Sumatran Orangutan's enclosure).

The old Japanese Macaque exhibit where the Oak Lawn is now before the Savannah entry was also dated and not a very attractive looking exhibit but was a lot bigger than the afforementioned Macaque, Gibbon and Baboon exhibits were (the Baboon's got their exhibit in the Savannah in 1996 and the Macaques moved to Lesser Primates complex, well not the Japanese Macaques, they went off display in 1999 and ended up at Gorge too in early 2000s).

Same with the old Penguin pool, and old Crocodie exhibits next to 'Gibbon Row' (Croc exhibits were where Rhino stables are now) they old but wasnt the smallest and this along with the Japanese Macaque exhibit and an exhibit for Himalayan Tahr were the next most dated looking exhibits at the zoo..but werent on the same level of old and way rundown looking as 'Macaque Row' and 'Gibbon Row' were.

They were the standout last remnants of the old outdated parts of the zoo..but mostly everything was modern and new looking. The Orangutan (and initially 2 Chimpanzees too) complex was a bit plain and basic looking but it was still only 10 years old as exhibits when first saw it (the upgrades from 2002 onwards for the Orangutans were so so much better).

*for first year of personally visiting the zoo Tricia was still on her own (but always saw her in a much better exhibit with a pool etc; but she was joined by little Permai, Teduh and Putra Mas in December '92 which was lovely (and very adorable) to see.

Yeah its so aggravating to see silly acting people harassing the animals by doing stuff like that, poor Jaya, glad he has that bamboo pattern now to give him some more privacy (and glad he apparently has roam now of all four of those adjoining exhibits think with access tunnels in between).

their newest animal i think is the Agouti

Oh yeah remember last year thinking it was cool that the zoo had gotten some Redrumped Agoutis to live in one of the Lesser Primates exhibits (wonder if they'll end up sharing with one of the Tamarin species if they aren't already, Taronga had a setup like that for a few years in the early-mid 1990s: a Golden Lion Tamarin, Redrumped Agouti, Blue-and-Yellow Macaw and Sun Conure shared aviary). Saw a video the (Perth) zoo posted last year of one of the Agoutis nibbling on some food, very cute and had a punk-like sticky up hair that never recalled seeing on Taronga's Agoutis who always seemed shiny short-coated).

also they have their own enclosure, however you don't usually see the agoutis out at day because they are part of the animals up late program

@Jayden8763

This is great to have some more news about Perth Zoo on here, usually its news directly found from the zoo's social media accounts that our ZooChat amigos find and share. Most of the regular news from personally visiting zoos in Aus' is a lot of the zoos in the eastern states. Have personally really wanted to hear more regular visitors knowledge and info updates about the zoo in recent times that might not of been found on the social media etc. Hoping to revisit early next year.

Marmolady just uploaded some great photos from Perth Zoo on the media thread want to go look at again as probably missed some.

Re - the Agoutis: It's a shame they don't really have the Agoutis out at daytime they're very cool and many day visitors would enjoy seeing them + they're usually diurnal unless in an area where are hunted in an increased amount. But cool they are in the 'Animals up late' program anyway (didn't know the zoo had that program, that's cool).

p.s should mention, personally never got to see the black Leopard, she was always hiding when visited; but saw the Persian Leopards sometimes.

they do have them out at daytime except usually they hide until night

Oh right right ok that makes sense, they are very shy. Only saw the Agoutis at Taronga once or twice in the 1990s/early 2000s, usually were hiding too. Oh cool well see why with the Animals up late program how it would help with visitors getting to see them more.

Hey are there still Redeared Slider turtles in the underwater viewing exhibit in the Asian Rainforest?, what used to be the former Otter exhibit.

the animals that remain in the Asian rainforest are: Asian small clawed otter, Sumatran orangutan, Asian elephants (soon to be moved), sun bears, white-cheeked gibbon, Sumatran tiger, komodo dragon, Javan gibbon, red panda, binturong. the Redeared slider turtle i think is still at the zoo however in another location at the zoo. If I had to guess i would say the reptile house is where it resides.

@Jayden8763 Oh cool thanks man

@tetrapod You remember the Striped Hyenas over time in several exhibits hey from the Bear 'pits' at one time or another and in the 'Big Cat Row'/later 'Macaque Row' hey

Hey Jayden
Welcome....
I'm also very interested in the history of Perth Zoo - particularly 70s and 80s.
I agree that the zoo isn't very interested in it's history, and I have struggled to ever get them to engage in any discussions in that regard.
I have posted a few on my old pics in the Perth gallery - you might have to scroll back a bit beyond the more recent pics.
I also have a 'video' (cinefilm) from the late 70s, but I am struggling to try and extract it from a wider file (the Polar Bear pic in the gallery is a screenshot from the film).
I wondered if there was a facebook group or something...I'd really like to find people's old pics of the 70s/ 80s zoo - which is now completely gone.
