Perth Zoo Perth Zoo - General Discussion and Speculation

Sri Lankan leopard would be ideal as they’re not subject to the issues associated with housing small felids near apex predators. This would all be negated by housing orangutan adjacent; but your idea of Sri Lankan leopard would make more efficient use of a larger space.

Sri Lankan leopard could also rotate with the tigers theoretically, unless that’s to be designated to expanding tiger holdings.
Theoretically, if the Sun Bears are to be phased out too; that would give them four reasonably sized enclosures within close proximity of each other which would essentially allow for a rotational system to be implemented for Sri Lankan Leopards and Sumatran Tigers.

Does anyone know will the Primate crossing connect to the Asian rainforest?

Think the plan is for it to cross in a circular like way around the trees (date palms? etc) of the main lawn and back to the lake islands (would be amazing if it connected to the trees of the 'rainforest retreat' area, that would be something spectacular too hey, with that walking trail through a rainforest setting).

That’s what I’ve heard; with the Orangutans (the stars of the Asian rainforest) being seperate. The aerial lines may well be built to different strengths; and in any case, the masterplan implies covered/enclosed aerial lines for the orangutans (presumably for safety reasons).

Yes, I'd assume so considering their close proximity.

Perth last held Fishing Cats circa 2008. In fact I believe Raja's current enclosure was where they were housed.
Perth Zoo has actually only ever held one Fishing cat. His name was Wayan and he was born 24/11/1997 at Melbourne Zoo. He transferred along with his brother (Jharna) to Adelaide Zoo in 2000; before arriving at Perth Zoo 27/07/2004.

Wayan died at Perth Zoo 12/08/2008 and they have not held the species since.

i'm surprised i remember him so well, i know my memory of perth zoo from when i was younger isnt the best (around the 2000s) interesting to learn his history , Wayan being where Raja's current enclosure is make sence.

i do wish i still had my old perth zoo maps, but i think they got thrown out, still looking for one my parents had of the zoo in the 80s (wich i know i asked them to keep) as i love seeing how the zoo has evolved over the years.

There’s several old maps in the Perth Zoo gallery. This one (1987) was uploaded by @snowleopard:

I am imaging a Zoo with Primates everywhere in the sky Gibbons,Lemurs and Orangatans big Cats chasing the Primates Tigers,Leopards and Lions wide open mix species exhibits Giraffes,Rhinos,Elands,Ostrich and Nyala in the background of a massive botanical garden and native wildlife like Numbats.

Since the lawn has just be Renovated does anyone think the zoo will add an animal on the lawn? Or Primate and Big Cats crossings? And I wonder will the zoo get Seals?

I think they'll be separate - it appears the gibbon aerial lines will connect to the islands on the main lake; potentially forming a route surrounding them but I don't foresee them being as extensive as what is proposed for the orangutans.

With the orangutans likely remaining on their side of the zoo it's therefore acceptable that they'll receive a different aerial line; perhaps looping around the Asian trail.

I'd assume Perth will be wanting to keep the lawn as it is. I know Melbourne's lawns are popular during warmer weather; often a place to picnic or relax. Going forward however, they always have the option of utilising this area if desired.

Seals would be nice however they're quite a large investment, especially financially. They're not in the zoos plans so I don't think we can expect to see Perth acquiring any anytime soon.

to add, i feel if perth where to get seals its not going to be at perth zoo but more likley AQWA , wich still has its old seal area (now just used for fish) but even then i think thats to small?

adding to the lawn , i dout they will remove it as well, they use it for events like zooyear and the summer sundowner evenings, wich to the couple i'v been to are very popular

It's unlikely the seals will return to AQWA, not only is the only old exhibit rather small but it's been completely repurposed into a coral reef tank.

If anything, Perth's a chance - but they are a huge investment. Taronga and Melbourne solely operate their facilities on the basis of taking on rescues; but even then, there's been talk of Melbourne theirs out.

Yeah I think of the zoo was to move the wetlands to where the orangutans are and make a ocean themed area where the Wetlands are I actually made a map of this a long time ago.View attachment 776874
If the zoo goes down this line with the Masterplan then the Zoo could hold Seals Plaese tell me your opinion:)

I’ll be honest, I can’t see Perth Zoo holding pinnipeds. They require a significant amount of space to build a modern exhibit (pools like Adelaide’s won’t cut it anymore) and the exhibits are extremely costly to maintain. Many zoos have phased out pinnipeds and I can certainly see Melbourne following.

Taronga’s set up is fantastic - multiple pools housing large numbers of pinnipeds. Perth lacks the space to build anything close to this.

Yeah it would make sense for the zoo not to get pinnipeds but maybe a new Zoo or Aquarium might open that holds pinnipeds. Perth lacks with Zoos and Aquariums like Sydney has Taronga zoo Taronga Western plains Sydney zoo and Sea life and Perth only has Perth Zoo and Chavasham Wildlife park and some other smaller zoos.

AQWA is located a 25 minute drive from the city so is considered the 'Aquarium' of Perth and WA as a whole.

Considering Perth already has an aquarium, it doesn’t need another one.

However what Perth really needs is an open range zoo. They’re housing a number of large species that would be better suited to an open range setting.

I can’t see an open range zoo happening either (after multiple failed attempts), but it would be invaluable in housing rhino, giraffes and large breeding groups of lions and hyena.

Yeah I forgot to add them to the list but yeah but they only hold fish sharks turtles and jelly fish there there is no Seals and a large tank for Dolphins

i don't think AQWA will ever hold dolphins again after what happened to them back in i think it was 1999 or 2000 plus is just to small anyways for them now

Absolutely agree! An open range facility could've also allowed the retention of elephants within the state.
