Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2012

I believe I read somewhere that the bull Patra Mas was indeed fertile. Possibly he has issues with mating itself.
Regardless, time is of the essence to get Permai's first calf :).

The non-breeding may well be because this pair have been together since a very young age. The bull might well mate with unfamiliar cows, or the cow with a different bull. Location is an unusually big problem for Perth though.

Permai is twenty three years old, and the recommended maximum breeding age for first time mothers is twenty four. I believe I read somewhere that the bull Patra Mas was indeed fertile. Possibly he has issues with mating itself.

At least 2 attempts at AI have been made with the elephants at Perth Zoo that l am aware of, obviously none successful.

Having grown up as siblings means the stimulus ain't there.
I just wonder also whether the female has a cycle at all ..

Given the cost of AI, l would be surprised if they would do this with an elephant was not cycleing.

From an article about the Perth elephants I read some year(s) ago, she did cycle, the bull mated her (although rather late), and when she didn`t get pregnant from natural mating, they did AI. Which, as we now know, didn`t help neither. It is safe to consider her as a non-breeder now. Plus, if she got pregnant at age 23, she would have a terrible risk of having a stillbirth at best or dying together with her calf at worst. The recommended maximum breeding age as of 24 (= age at birth 26) is too high.

Does anyone know what sort of timescale they are looking at for the 'Jungle' exhibit being planned near where the South American parrots are?

Just to add to this that the masterplan includes a mixed gorilla/colobus exhibit, so maybe this will be part of 'Jungle'?

I'd like to see the plans - i have a horrible feeling it's going to look quite cramped with the sort of space they have available. I was rather hoping to see a large walk-through area for northwest and northeast birds - by the way, do you know if any Australian collections include Riflebirds? (any of the three species since they are all found in Australia)

I don't know if he's still alive. I believe he may be/have been the last riflebird in an Australian zoo (?)

A Victoria's Riflebird was still alive in 2008 - I took some shots of him in the Rainforest Aviary on Christmas Day of that year.

Great! Will check it out tomorrow. Whilst watching a wildlife documentary today i couldn't help thinking how nice it would be to have Comb-crested jacanas in the wetlands aviary.

Where are they releasing them?

Perth Zoo is going to renovate the front entrance later this year. There isn't any mention of adding new animal exhibits with this renovation but let's see.
