Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Ok then the Zoo must if not update the off display part of the website the Meerkat will be on display next week.

The new girls that will be moving on display are still in quarantine. Only for another week or two though.
The Zoo announced it on a recent Facebook post in the comments.

Does any one know why the Zoo shut the walk in exhibit in the Primate trail?

i'll have a look for you :) but as jambo said , i don't think they will have it for a change that isnt long term, however there will likley be a new map in a week and a bits time because:

Zoorassic park
Starting Monday March 31st perth zoo will have zoorassic park

page says whats on:

Uncover surprises in the Play-leontology Pit

Zoorassic Park

----
i would love to go see them on 'opening' week but of corse thats when i'm in adelaide lol

saw on a Facebook comment the Dino’s are around for a year.also saw a comment saying it will change in that time

I’m predicting tomorrow/mondays opening will just be the amphitheater area with them then working more on the other part of the female elephant enclosure and once putra mas leaves expanding it into his.

Does anyone know if Permai and Putra mas will be together in monarto? If so why were they not together before Permai left? Were they worried they would breed?

Why was Putra mas kept so away in his own enclosure I know there are rules but other zoos the bull is fine to be in with the other females... Is he that bad?

I kinda feel bad for Putra mas tbh :(

No, they will be held in seperate exhibits as per the natural social order of the species. Assuming an integration can be successfully achieved, Permai will live with the other three cows.

Bulls naturally transition out of the matriarchal herd at adolescence, so Perth Zoo we’re only replicating what would occur in the wild. Adult bulls are usually held separately at other zoos (including all Australian zoos) but enjoy social time with the cows/calves. Putra Mas will likely have this opportunity at Monarto Safari Park.

@Johnpaul21, I had the same question every time I went to the Zoo and they always said because he is an older bull they would have to be separated.

Male and female elephants don't naturally co-exist in the wild for extended periods; really only coming together to breed. So I don't imagine either would've been phased - Melbourne kept a bull and a cow together for a few decades prior to their Thai imports and although both lived together, they weren't necessarily close by any means.

Permai wouldn't have been able to breed anyhow. She's never conceived and is now in her mid 30's so her window has long closed.

That would refer to the requirement to house adult bulls and cows separately. As I mentioned above, some zoos allow social interaction between bulls and cows - but never permanent cohabitation. This will be the case at Monarto.

Wild herds consist of related adult females and calves. Bulls are driven out at adolescence and from that point on, only visit female herds for mating (in the wild, this occurs once a bull hits his prime at 20-25 years; but in captivity, much younger bulls have been bred with cows).

Thanks for the response, so I take it Permai and Putra mas will be able to be together but only for short periods.

Second Point: I am aware Putra Mas already has sired 2 calves, via AI, one unfortunately died but his other child is still alive.... Is he still able to breed and will he (not with Permai) but maybe with the other elephants at Monarto (Not via AI) such as Pak Boon or Tang Mo. These are just ideas but it would be cool to have some new elephants in the region.

Yes, that’s correct. Putra Mas would likely be allowed to have social interactions with all four cows at Monarto. Aside from having each other for support, they’ll be in a large exhibit which afford the cows an escape route should Putra Mas chase them etc. Dubbo have an exhibit purely for the purpose of introductions with a gate system called a ring-a-rosey gate (it basically slows the bull down if pursuing the cow as they have to run around it); though the aim of the region is for well socialised bulls and cows that interact appropriately.

Putra Mas is very much a viable bull. Since both his calves were AI, he’s not a proven natural breeder; but I hope that he’ll be able to breed naturally at Monarto. Only one of the four cows is viable, which is Pak Boon. Tang Mo is a non-viable breeder; and Burma and Permai are both well past the recommended upper limit for first time breeding (early 20’s).

Why is Tang Mo not viable can I ask.... She's the youngest after all?

The keeper myself and @steveroberts asked didn’t know an exact reason, only that the Berlin team had investigated Tang Mo’s reproductive system and said breeding wouldn’t be viable.

There were multiple attempts involving AI and natural breeding between 2009-2012. She had a positive pregnancy test at one stage, but it appears to have a been a chemical pregnancy as it never progressed to term. It could be a hormone imbalance; or something affecting her ability to carry the calf to term (an abnormality of the uterus) to speculate on a couple of possibilities.
